My real problem as of late is stainless to carbon steel 3g, 2g, and 4g. They look ok, but not good. I can weld aluminum in the positions very well, as well as just carbon steel, but stainless just gives me big trouble.

I weld on furnace tubes, all kinds of alloys **** i aint never herd of. we have one tube called kabota just like the tractor. its a japanese company that makes its own tubes. Any way i dont do anything different from one alloy to the other. i weld carbon steel the same way i weld Hp, except for the purge. if you can put the bead in carbon u can put it in anything, dont let it intimidate u. the only difference is the purge. set up a carbon coupon and purge it, use a 309 rod

If the shop works on inconel, they will have scrap, all you have to do find the filler. That crap is high. I have no experience with Titanium. Seems like a hassle, good luck on that.

Tig is my gig too, with a sprinkle of mig for taste. The reason I suggested getting those specs is I use them to develope procedures for different jobs. Used to be I could buy a SWPS from AWS and still can, or my customer would engineer it. Now I am the sucker that has to do it. Like prehardened 4130 or 6061 post weld heat treated. For a short time during the Iraq war I had to work hand in hand with a General Dynamics engineer against my will to qualify to weld homogenous armor plate. For 2 years I was the only qualified vendor for them, then it went dormant. Now they won't even give me an engineer, AND I have to develope my own WPSs.

Point is welding samples for PQRs are substantially more complex than operator certs. Hell, you could qualify yourself out of your garage under the right circumstances. Start with the old mil-specs, then move onto the AWS specs and learn them. And you are right, it is nothing like school.

Did you get these at school or your job? If not your job, they probably don't care. But you have a job. That is a great start.

I would buy a tig and start honing your skills on your own. Countless hours honing your stainless and alum skills can transfer over to high temp steel alloys, ti, and D1.2/D17.1. That guy FieldRes does it and it payed off for him. Now I gave you a list of manuals to study. The AWS forums as well as others can offer some clarity on them as they are a pain, but essential to the process.

"The Man" thinks you can get it all at school. Not everyone can do school, and school only scratches the surface. Sounds like you have the basics, so some metalurgy, techincal math, blueprint reading, quatlity control are some very good school courses to take.

Re: TIG: Where do I go from here.

I wont name any names but a famous dude was in house and I had to do something to him in his room. Outside were the usual assemblage of hangers on, including this 20-something gal who turned out to be his daughter. I was about to go in and she stopped me and said "so you're the best at this, right?" I said "I've done more than a few, if thats what you mean." She went off about how whenever anybody asks you how good you are, you should say I'm better than everybody else. At which point I said "Well, if I have to tell you how good I am, I must not be very good." She looked confused.

As Bruce Lee said "If I tell you I'm good, you'll think I'm boasting. If I tell you I'm no good, you'll know I'm lying."

He's a little loony, but If you watch his videos you will see he did what was suggested here

He took speciality courses at his local trade school

Then he went and bought supplies, Ti and inconel pipe - a length, an interpas temp and gas monitor Thousands of $ spent then he practised, then he tested and got the tickets.

The reason they are top teir welders is they have speciality knowledge and experience that took time, effort and money to obtain.

Also agree, speak with the ones there that have that knowledge, maybe you can get some private training time, some scrap material, maybe your company pays for training...

I was Travis' Welder Helper on a Job!

He was quite articulate and he could answer and explain every question I had about the Welding.

“Loony” he was not. Pretty normal guy actually.

In Canada, we have to go to school. We have to. We have to go to Welding school in order to be a Welder. In Alberta where Travis/Fieldres is from, it is 3 years. In another Province it may be 4 years.

Travis went to Nait in Alberta for 2 years and he did his 3rd year at another school, I can’t remember the name.

He went to a school named “GRB College of Welding” immediately after the 3 years of schooling at Nait.

I was talking about it with him because I wanted to be where he was and he said Since he got his B pressure ticket in January 2009 he has constantly been going to this GRB welding school

He was saying that Titanium costed $3600 for a 4 days course! But that’s like 3 days wage for him so I don’t think he really cares much.

Gotta pay to play I guess!
