I got rained out mowing the lawn, so I was back hard surfacing cultivator shovels and trying a few of these ideas this aft. Armed with scientific equipment like duct tape, electrical tape and an el cheapy head band style LED I undertook some dedicated research. I was thinking about heat susceptibility so first I tried duct taping the light to the inside wrist of my welding glove. Not bad... but you can't aim the light and put the rod where you want it at the same time, so that got tossed. Next I taped it to the handle on the stinger and ran into a couple probs. Every time you twist the stinger to add or remove a rod, or tighten it, you change the aim of the light and more often than not shine it in your own face. Heat wise it stood up pretty good. I think bluing the plastic lens from the heat/smoke would be a bigger problem than heat on the LED itself. I lit the duct tape up a couple times ( a true student of the 70's, me and Bill never inhaled, but I still like to burn the rod down to the roach clip) but it didn't seem to bother the light. Being inside of the rod where your hand was going to go anyway, being in the road wasn't a big issue... at least not on this job, but I could see where that might be an issue. So, on to Plan C , or my Hobart AD helmet which is similar in shape to the one Ronsii posted... a little long on the chin. I tried it on the bottom of the helmet and that's where it worked for the rest of the afternoon. Since I was back working in the "Where's Waldo" shop with bad lighting, it actually helped a lot. This post also reminded me it was time to take the helmet apart and clean the lenses so I did that as well. Without extra light I was having to lift the helmet to hop around between shovels. I like to weld about 3" at a time and move around so I don't concentrate heat in one part of the shovel and lead to breakage. With the light I didn't lift the helmet and was able to move around much more quickly and effectively. It didn't make a difference once the helmet darkened and the arc was in contact, but it was very helpful going in and pulling out. We might be onto something here... could the next big addition to helmets be built in lighting?

I still haven't had a chance to finish the led setup on my shop hood... whenever I get around to it and I have more spare time I plan on taking the flir gun and doing some tests on the face of the hood and the leds when they have been on and close to a good sustained arc to see what temp they will be up to.

Hmmmm, interesting idea... could be a bit cumbersome... but doing wide open welding would work fine... heat might be an issue when the rod gets down a ways...

heh heh heh...That could work.... I don't think I've done more than a 20 hours welding indoors for the last year or so though... 95 percent of my work is field repair outdoors in the sun/clouds/rain/wind/snow/etc...

When I fab some stuff in the bosses shop I usually do turn out the lights because if you don't it'll trip the breaker after a bit.

Well....... it was a lot easier to see how far the drill bit was coming into the hood with me wearing it.... and I needed two hands on the drill for obvious reasons so I just tightened down the pivots and went for it

It got a little complicated when the step bit caught some of my hair and wrapped it up a bit before I could let go of the trigger ... but thank God these cordless drills have reverse!!!!

There is plenty of room below the ledge underneath the lens.... not optimal... but could be done... I meant to grab my lincoln hood out of the truck but forgot i must have a dozen different hoods that are AD and I doubt 2 of em' are shaped alike

I think they still sell these 'cats eye' led's on ebay/amz... if I remember they ran about .80-1.50 / ea. qty10's and they are 3-5-7 watts ea??? something like that they are designed to run on 12vdc but I think have seen some rated higher....

I like the fact that they are recessed [emoji106]

Is there enough room to mount them BELOW the lens? (Chin height ). I think if you could the lighting would be easier to direct......maybe.

Might shim the led's to shine a bit higher but they are close to whe i'd normally need them..

Could always put more down lower on the hood anyways... Haven't decided on what or how to power them... might just run a lightweight wire to a barrel connector and have a little batt pack on my belt or something???

Now I gotta find a welding project that needs more lighting

I was in the shop working on an order this morning and came across some of those little round led's I had from another project years ago... so took a break, grabbed one of the shop hoods and a drill....
