I still need to buy the 4” on center T111 siding for the left and right sides of the shed, buy and install the trim pieces and do the door handles and locks. I’m not in a hurry especially with lumber prices being so fricking rediculouse atm. If you were asking if the shed is done the answer is no. This thread was for fabricating the door hinges, the doors are hung and solid. Task complete.

Re: (HELP) Need advice on building door hinges.

I saved a video this morning of a guy making handles out of flat stock, big bolts and reebar.

Not sure I like it enough though to make a set for the shed.

After I can no longer can use standard door hinges. To keep the cost just to make my own.

They are no more than two pipes and a pin.
I start with 1/2" pin size and 1" bar stock about 5" long.

At one time I used 1/2" pipe as I did not have bar stock.

Materials consist of 10’ of 4”x1/4” flat stock and four pieces of 4” greasable german hinge joints or what ever they are called. The idea is to weld it all up so they will be able to close and have both sides rest on each other or as near as possible to each other. I have not begun mocking and cutting up the material yet and figured I’d ask incase some one has already done this or similar.

The flat bar of the hinges would preferably sit inside the shed like a regular door hinge with just the swivel part resting just outside of the trim on the door and side wall. They need to be at least 4.5” to 5” long in order to secure the doors and clear the door frame 2” x 4” wood with OSB backing and T1-11 siding as well as exterior finish trim. I looked at the hinges that are mounted on the outside but for the price I figured I could make four hinges and should end up with a heavier duty hinge that allows the look I’m after. The German hinge swivels are capable of holding 800 lbs each, plenty strong enough

Good idea on the space in the doors then just tack a lath or some rope across about mid-can height and you'll have every spray can at you finger tips I do similar on some of my shop walls and any other place's that are narrow... then I stock them with pb blaster, bee spray, ether and various other chem sprays... keeps things handy for easy to find uses!!!
    Thank you

Yeah I plan on keeping the most used things like PB, WD, starting fluid, brake cleaner etc on the main door that I’ll be using to get in and out of the shed so it will be outside of the shed when the door is left open. The other door that is locked from the inside will store other not so often used items like paint etc.

I was thinking of using something like you mentioned across the door shelves I’m just not sure exactly what I’ll use yet. Coat hanger wires, twine, peg board etc etc. I’ll figure it out when I get there.

The diagonals are gone so it’s a moot point at this stage of the build.

I agree, the diagonals are going the wrong way. Almost guarantee there will be some sagging over time.

Made some progress on the shed doors in the last couple of weeks. Today was the best of all my progress so I figured I'd share the update.

Oh I made plenty of mistakes and had a couple of times I had some oh Fk it moments. I did a couple things I would not normally do to get these all correct. I got really po’d the other day and last night as well. Bad memory and not paying attention to how they were made caused me to undo a couple of these several times.

You're doing fine Tony. Usually, the first time takes the longest. After that you know what not to do and what to do.
Same with artwork, after the first one the rest become easier and faster.
I gotta have my Classic 60's and 70's playing for best results. Even if I secure up it still sounds good .

You shouldn't have any sagging issues for sure.

I would have gone with only 4 hinges 2 per side but that would mean only one hinge would have the pin facing up. I want two pins facing up per side and one facing down so the doors can’t be lifted off of the hinges so easily. I’ve never done any of this so it’s all new to me. Just doing the best I can for me.

Finally finished welding the hinges out. If weather permits tomorrow I'll get the doors hung on the hinges.

Your diagonals are going the wrong way. They should be in compression, not tension.

This is how the hinges will rap around the added 2x4's

Re: (HELP) Need advice on building door hinges.

I'm adding a 2x4 to the outside edges where the hinges mount and modifying the hinges to rap around the 2x4's to help keep the stain out of the vertical seams. The center where the doors meet up will have another 2x4 overlap so the rain will run down the front and not down inside the shed. Here are some pics of the modified door hinges.

Re: (HELP) Need advice on building door hinges.

Easy enough to put a small gutter/water diverter right above the doors so water won't run down the top of the shed and into the door openings... I've actually done this on truck tool boxes
