99% run constantly because thats how the compressed air is used. its not the machine, its how the air is being used. they are very rarely used in places that do not have constant use.
also good piston compressors are a bit better than screw compressor in the smaller sizes.

Wouldn't be so bad if it could be located in a separate room, but like others have mentioned constant running would be a pain. Just depends on what the intended use I recon.

Yes but it is a scroll compressor not a screw compressor. 99% of screw compressors run constant . MY 5hp compressor runs constant when I sand blast too but I would not replace it with a constant running type compressor like a screw. I sand blast a couple times a month so its no big deal to let it run when blasting. If I had a screw compressor it would run all the time in the shop, forget that.

I was thinking about the Eastwood compressor but they jacked the price up on it to $1500. Still the cheapest in the industry last I looked.

you do often get small scroll compressors, typically oil free ones.

screw compressors don't always run all the time, it depends on how they are setup. most big commercial set ups they are sized so they run constantly and have variable speed or load/unload controls.
bu they can also run in start/stop if they have enough storage.

Screw and scroll compressors are not the same. A screw compressor is similar to a lot of superchargers used in automobiles, Whipple would be an example of a screw compressor. Scroll compressor is similar to those used inside some air conditioning units.

Think you mean "Screw" compressor, max your going to run is 7.5 hp on a home power single phase and that is pushing it, 5 hp is more realistic and a lot of screws aren't that small. Remember also a screw runs constantly so they use some power, you will see it in your utility bill. But for volume, they are the balls. Lot more maintenance items on them, filters, sumps,

Longevity is the "supposed" main concern. I've had a lot of shops over the last 40 plus years and done fine with a couple 5 to 7.5 tied and maybe 250 gallons of tank and pipe capacity. We do a ton of work here with air and a 5 hp/80 keeps up fine. At the window shop its 7.5/120 with die grinders sreaming. No problem. Don't let ads and numbers make your decisions.

Scrolls compressor seem to cost substantially more than piston compressors in the five horse or less category. I guess their main advantages in the low end power is the lack of noise at the cost of a higher expense for the equivalent amount of CFM.

Unless you just want to spend the $$$ and you say you don't do much blasting, I'd stick with what you have. It's paid for and does the job though it runs continuous when blasting but the blasting isn't an everyday task. Sounds like an urge to get a new toy IMO.

Scroll Compressor?

Anybody running one?

I have an old 60 gal upright and want to upgrade. It needs to power the usual air tools, spray equipment, and a pot blaster using small tips. The currrent unit (Campbell Hausefield 5 HP) will do this, but is running continuously when blasting.

My shop is a hobby, so I don't do a lot of blasting, or much else, but want as much air as I can get for a reasonable price, and want a unit that is quiet.

Suggestions?
