Attachment 1727916So this is where Im at with this thingAttachment 1727917 You can see how there is waves or hollows in the blade, well thats gonna get cut out and replaced with a piece thats East Penn is gonna roll for me. It will be half inch plate

Meanwhile til that arrives I am doin thisAttachment 1727919 There was some holes wore through on the bottom and the gussets were just about gone so I fixed the holes and welded 3/4 ar plate over them, lotsa waves in that so I pieced it all together welded them up anmd them beefed up the old gussets on the bottom, gonna do the same thing on the other side too and then there is some work on the side cutters to do, and some work on the moldboard

Yup thats one of the rock banks here there is a bunch of em, one of the reclamation contractors i mentioned earlier is supposed to start haulin it out to a pit needs filled up

There is a place here that makes all kinds of hardfaced overlay plate for mining and other applications. They even have their own line of hardfacing wires, etc. Is that an option for the blade?

I work on the little brothers to those machines, but hey I have done some bigger stuff on occasion.

I be usin Innershield wire on this thing like most of what I do, unless of course I run out of it which almost happened this week. Seems they are havin trouble gettin the wire at the weld supply outfit (anyone else notice this???) and I thought I would be stick weldin it but 14 rolls of it came in yesterday and I stuffed 6 of em in my rig. Dual shield wire dont work too good here the wind is always blowin here pretty strong, and I dont feel like cuttin out a bunch of swiss cheese and messin with wind screens that blow away first big gust comes along

I will talk to Joe about the Trimay outfit see what he says

We have some sinkhole troubles in Eastern PA as well, city of Shamokin had 2 of em I think recently, and some in what used to be wadesville but wadesville is gone now they owned the land and bought the houses from the folks and started strippin it back in the late 90s I think, I used to do a lot of work for them out that way. It really made me feel old when I said to the kid who was out there with me I remember when this was a village, he said what do you mean? I told him this was a village at one time and there was a honey of a woman lived right about where that shovel sets, dammit she had a nice butt. Kids says Popeye you aint that old to remember that stuff, I told him this all happened around 1998 or 99, Oh he said they can do that? I said hell yeah they own the land and they got the money and money talks in this busness.

Pottsville PA had a huge sinkhole right at the edge of town, the thing was about 75 yards long and about 40 yards wide and maybe 60 foot deep. Now keep in mind these veins run strait up and down they arent flat we call it strait pitch. So what ever has this thing plugged up could let go and coukd run 1000ft strait down. We built 8 trusses out of I beams to go across the hole, what they weighed i dont know, but we got a big crane up there and set them across the hole and tied them all together with I beams across the bottom and across the top and used somethin like the roof bolts they use in the soft coal regions and bolted em solid to the top rock and the bottom rock. It made like a big plug. Lemme tel ya it a bit shaky at ime down in that hole welding those I beams in to place. Stuff woukd come rollin down the walls, some times you could hear rumbling down below and then we had to weld beams across the top of the trusses too. Then they threw some scrap steel and scrap concret chunks and filled up the hole with concrete.

That one I was glad when that was done, that rumbling down below me sounded a lot worse to me than when I worked underground, maybe it was because i never heard it from up on top or outside before

I be puttin 1 inch overlay on it, after I get the base cut out and fixed up. The brand of overlay is called raptor, East Penn Rebuilders gets it for them.

Another customer we got just uses AR 450 for the new skin and then run 1 1/4" X 6" AR 450 crossways across the blade, a lot more work but they say it works out better for them, when one or 2 of the bars wear out cut em off and weld a new one or 2 back on, or 3 or whatever. The only thing I see with that method is the material hangs up on the blade and in the winter it freezes solid. Makes the machine work harder too. But they get what they want.

How much material they move with a machine I coudnt say, I dont know that they keep those kinds of records, but they can tell you when a truck body was rebuilt or when a bolt was replaced somewhere...down to the hour believe it or not for just about anything they got there

The same type of fire got started last month out near Trevorton PA about 20 or 25 miles west of Centralia. Some folks used to dump their junk in an old pit with tires and trash and some goofball decided to light it up, sure enough the vein caught fire and got into an abandoned underground mine. They dumped 1.7 million gallons of water in it, to put it out. It seems like it might have worked in this one, the unbderground temps are lower and they havent detected the high co2 levels that they were getting when they first found the fire.

They tried that in Centralia but it didnt work because there were too many openings into other coal veins and too many openings on the surface to give the fire air and a chimney. There are no accurate maps for either one of these mines in Trevorton or Centralia because there are old bootleg holes all over the place so they really have no idea where the fires could go. The family that worked the mine in Trevorton from what I been told is pretty sure this mine isnt connected to any other veins so that might be a big help

Im not really sure what they want me todo here as the maintenance manager went on a fishing trip and wont be back til sometime this week. There are a lot of places where the base matal for the skin is pushed in pretty far between the walls on the inside of the blade, and you cant bulldog any of the overlay plate down that far with out busting up the overlay and the only way to replace that base metal is to cut the back out so you can get to the welds on the inside, and I am pretty sure they dont want to go that route.

What I am thinkin of doing is get some mild 1/2 plate rolled to fit and weld that on top of what is there and then puttin the overlay on top that, or just gettin some 3/4 or 1 inch AR 450 or 500 rolled to fit and weld that on top of what is there. The overlay plate we will probly use if we use it would probly be somethin called Raptor, I put some of it on a D8 last year when I was up in Mahanoy City doin some work for the same people. As for how long it lasts I couldnt say.

What I used to do for another outfit is put a new 3/4" Ar plate skin on and then weld 1 inch x6 inch wide plates crossways across the blade, it held up pretty good. The only thing with doin that depending on what material your pushin it tends to hang up the blade instead of just rollin off, especially in the winter, so your machine is workin harder to do the job, but tha1t is what they wanted so thats what I did.

Most of these companies in the Anthracite coal fields buy the stuff thats wore out or well on its way to gettin wore out, it was let go far to long before they bought it and then these guys where it out even further. As far as Im concerned it just keeps a guy like me busy so I dont complain about it. When its done I know I did the best job I could do and in most cases lasts a long long time, provided they give me time and the material to do it. Ive done some work already for some smaller outfits that really, really really wear it out and want you to work miracles with it...and Ive done it for them and they call me back for more of the same. It gets frustrating sometimes but it still pays the bills. Some of the worst outfits to do work for is the outside contractors that get the contracts to do the reclamation. Those guys dont make much money doin it if thats all they do, as compared to the guys that do the mining as well. But those guys really get some awful lookin machinery, one outfit that does it the owner buys stuff he sees online without even lookin at it. But like I said if I get a call from them I go, they have no problem payin up when its done, and it pays the bills

Its never easy, it never was easy. If it was easy they would have kids and little old ladies doin it 7/24 for 3 bucks an hour. But in the end from my perspective I am still havin fun and I get to do stuff other folks are afraid to do...me.. I like the challenge of doin what most say cant be done

I thought it was a big deal when I coated a dozen plow shares with abrasion resistant rod,,
each share took about ten rods,, (1/8") and I was welding with a Lincoln Tombstone,, AC of course,,

We changed the shares about every 10 days of plowing,, on a 7 bottom plow.
The front and rear shares wore noticeably quicker than the center ones,, Sometimes we would only "rotate" the shares,,

    LOL!

I cut the skin off this one ATuesday wendsday and yesterday in between some other stuff i was doin. One day next week a fella from East Penn Rebuilders is gonna come out with some kinda lazer thing to measure the roll we need for it. We might be puttin a layer under the wear plate first, the base metal is pretty crappy and has big hollows in between the inside walls on the blade, I forgot to get pictures of it but rest assured it sure aint a pretty lookin thing, I hope i remember to get some pics next week. Meanwhile Im rebuilding the bottom corners and the side cutters.
