If you have a problem differentiating between a good deal, a steal of a deal, and out and out theft......... you have a problem. Now..... some outfit that is dumping some good stuff in the dumpster ....... you gotta at least ask them............... and that is then a "find" or a ''score''! .............

I wasn't talking about stuff like that. As long as you ask (or get told by some one that your pretty sure has the legal right to do so) it isn't stealing. I was referring to the kind of people who make a habit of taking anything and everything (like tools and equipment) they possibly can off a job site. I've worked with guys that purposely carried the larger igloo cooler as a lunch box for no other reason than that it facilitated them walking out with some thing every day.

I brought home pipe today. 40' of 1" black. Maybe twenty pieces of take out involved in a remodel. The boss, the sprinkler people, and I were there. I asked: "Is this going in the dumpster?" The sprinkler installer replied: "We aren't going to use it." I said: "I'd like it."

Is that stealing?

If you support yourself machining then by definition you are "pro" BUT: like me you probably don't advertise yourself as being professional though 10 yrs. making aerospace parts I reckon I am......... it's a long way from being a master tool and die maker though!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I was just rambling about how as long as you ask someone it is not stealing. There are a lot of things that walk off jobs. I never get anything I do not ask the owner if I can keep. Speaking of burdensome, whacky psychological tests I once had to take the MMPI ( Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory ) as part of getting a security clearance to work a shut down at a nuclear plant. There's 500+ questions on that one. Two of the stranger questions I remember pretty distinctly were "Have you ever had a desire to wear your Mother's underwear?" and "Have you ever had a desire to fondle your own or others feces?".

They let us take it off site to fill it out so me and this Welder from TN (who I threw in with to rent a place to stay) got a 12 pak and sat at the kitchen table discussing (and laughing) at some of the questions while we each filled ours out. The really weird thing is that despite how much we collaborated and discussed a lot of the questions talking about which would be the best way answer some of them when we turned it in I passed and he "failed". They gave him a redo at it and the second time around he "passed". Oh man I ragged him pretty hard over that for the rest of the job. Every time he'd want to argue about something with me I just look at him and say "What do you know? You weren't even smart enough to check NO when they asked you if you wanted to wear your Mom's bra & panties."

The other bizarre thing I remember from getting a security clearance for that job was the polygraph test. The last of the 5 questions they asked was "Have you ever stolen anything from a job site?" Oh man, they finally had to change that to "Have you ever stolen anything worth more than a $100 from a jobsite?" before they could get very many of this thieving hoard of road hands they had assembled to pass it.

You don't have to do the first part. You can click on the second link, make up a name and get to the questions. You don't even have to answer them before clicking on next in order to go thru them. You just have to click on "yes" each time in the little block that pops up asking you if you're sure you want to skip the question.

I was curious as to the questions. I got shut out of the survey when I said less than 5 years experience. My son is a young machinist (and knowledgeable welder), kick *** in his way, but not quite 5 years on the job. College trained, good at it, he can hold tenths and program CNC in G-code as well. Good TIG welder. Also talented in electrical/electronic things, protocols and whatnot. He and folks like him are the future, but ... Ask the questions that give you the result you are looking for ???

You know since a regular "lab rat" won't run a maze with out thinking there's a piece of cheese in it for him at the end along with the OP's failure to offer even a small piece of cheese to any of us for running this maze of questions she's set up well, what does that say about the level of respect she has for the kinds of "blue collar" people to be found on these forums.

I love R. Lee Ermey. Met him in D.C. in a Congressman's office some years back prior to a press conference. After hours, I had a chance to hang with him for a few minutes at a local bar. He wasn't drinking, but did bum a few cigarettes from me outside. He is real and really funny.

Learned behavior - Pavlov's dog - just the way things are done. It's a rare thing when someone can think outside the box of conditioning and take a quantum leap. Now, I'm not saying or implying that the OP is in any way gaming things. But how can anyone work inside norms and make more than a small incremental improvement?

As for welding and machining, that is a broad categorization. Getting into the industry and having a fulfilling job seems rather random, almost by chance in some locations. As long as they are regarded as "blue collar" jobs that any monkey can do, then we're doomed to having bridges and buildings fall down, crappy cars and other machines that wear out all too soon, etc.

The world needs weldors, plumbers, electricians, equipment operators, carpenters, and etc. Sad reality is society no longer values those career fields, and it's taught in grade school to get an excessively overqualified and over priced college education and avoid craft careers. I can see a little social engineering useful if it's used to combat this self destructive pattern. Perhaps the study is to fine out what motivated welders to take on their career.

Better yet, let the market sort itself out. Scarcity raises value of pretty much anything that is useful, including skilled labor. It will be ugly in 20 years, but those that seek out craft skills will be well rewarded when no one else can do much needed things. Feast and famine has worked for motivating necessary changes in society for millennia.

Maybe I've just become unduly cynical but I can't seem to help viewing all this as a sad commentary on the state of our government funded higher education system. I also can't help but think that this persons actual primary goal with this nonsense is nothing other than to just keep the government research funding money tap turned on and flowing in her direction. It's the same cause and effect that's gotten us all this bogus (so called) "climate science" that those among us that would be our "Political Masters" have used to manipulate public opinion to their benefit (and our detriment).

She may refer to her field of study as "Industrial / Occupational Psychology" but it's basically just a continuation of the "Radical Behaviorism" pioneered by B. F. Skinner. What this person is actually studying is how to manipulate the "feelings and emotions" of others. And while there's probably some value to be had out of understanding what causes certain emotions and feelings in order to help people get along in the work place and make an organization run more efficiently well, imagine what that that kind of expertise could do in the hands of those who would like to set themselves up as out political masters (ie. any future Stalin or Hitler).

Mine all hum. Sometimes louder...sounds like a fan. I always thought that was 'cause they were happy. Some are loud, hot stuff spews out of a pipe on top. In every crowd is a very loud happy guy, life of the party sort.
