GREAT pictures, GREAT INFO,,,brings back some memories of me doing climbing and out of position stuff. Can't do any of it any longer, broke my body in a crash. I truly put evel knievel to shame. I do appreciate the pictures. Stay safe !!!

If you need to use a milling cutter in a machine that is not a milling machine,,
grind off all of the teeth, except one, then go real slow.

Even a drill press can use a "re-sharpened" milling cutter like that, . The one remaining tooth has to be SHARP!!

Even an old, dull milling cutter can be used in a milling machine the same way,
sharpen one cutter, and grind away the rest, and go real slow.

It works pretty well in a pinch as long as you've got a big and good quality mag base drill, really it was a job for a line boring setup, but we didn't have one so this worked pretty well.

The trick is to make sure you have a mag base where you can adjust the rails clamping force, you need to tighten it up to get rid of as much side to side slop as possible (I tighten it until its actually pretty hard to move the head up and down), and then make sure the base of the drill can't move, so a few nice big clamps as well as the magnet, or a few times i've tacked some scrap steel around the base of the drill to get it located, but in this case because it has already been galvanised wrecking that by tacking to it wasn't really an option so clamps are the next best option.

Great work on a lot of out of position welds. "Average" is a relative term!

Beautiful work. Mag drills hold a lot better when they are stuck on something of a lot of mass.

Very impressive work! Being that I'm dealing with the most severe back pain right now, I would suggest doing a lot of pre and post stretching and even massage when having to do jobs where you have to be a contortionist. Trust me, you don't want pull a muscle or pinch a nerve in your back or your neck for that matter. I'm using a walker to get around and sleeping in a recliner. Much better than taking 2-1/2hrs. to get out of bed and on my feet.

Not stainless, just galvanised 350 grade, the strap on top of the mag base is to lift it with an overhead crane (that mag base was a heavy mofo, about 120 pounds), the clamps where just to help keep it still, the magnet works great for a hole, but the side loading with a boring bars will move it around a lot more easily so a few nice big clamps helps keep the drill still.

And yeah, PNG is Papua New Guinea.

Was the tube you were boring Stainless Steel ? I noticed you had two cramps, and a lifting strap on the Drill motor. Maybe it was more for the accuracy of the bore?

Is PNG = Papua/New Guinea ?

Welding a water supply line for the economiser of a boiler with CONAC 49C 7018.



Full penetration open root with MIG on structural steel.



Vertical up on cast in plates in pre cast concrete panels with 7016 rods,



Replacing the electrical switch room on a 2'000 ton stacker in a coal mine.



Boring a hole to exactly 48.55mm with a magnetic base drill and a boring bars to fit a bushing for a drive motor.



Welding some boiler tube in a tight spot.



and actually being able to get comfortable doing it.

A temper bead weld on a B3 header in a coal power station boiler.

I went looking through my old files and realised I actually have pics from quite a few different jobs floating around so I figured it wouldn't hurt to put a few of what I think are the best ones in one place.


This is a boiler feed water valve I replaced a few years ago and the original valve, this was one of those jobs that took alot of planning to get the new valve into place, get the old one cut out and the new one in and welded, it's always good seeing nice new stuff in place







A little 1 1/2 inch ID 3/4 inch wall B3 pipe for a boiler attemperator spray nozzle.
