Perhaps reinforcing the splice will get better results on LONGER belts and bigger machines with larger diameter pulleys.

I have four 1x42 setups and extra belts in tool box drawer with those dry silica desiccated packs.

Mine are 1x42 belts and I used a 4" long piece.
On my Foley Belsaw Sander with spring tension pulley, it was hardly noticeable.

I used a fairly long splice so didn’t really notice. Plus I was too busy gritting my teeth…..

Yeah mine were perhaps marginally better. I gave up as it’s no fun wondering when it’s gonna break as opposed to paying attention to what I was doing. [emoji23]

Definitely improved from not adding the tape.

[emoji23] I teach a few youngins starting out and others getting ready to certify.
I always find basic hand tools, clamps, and goodies. I buy them cheap and give to my students for free. Buying ball pein hammers for $1.00 , chisels / punches for $0.25 each, and C clamps for a buck is hard to pass up.
I have way too many of everything. [emoji23]

One at a garage sale, Craigslist, and others on Facebook marketplace.
I'm retired, so I always check a few times a day. When they're that cheap the sell quick.
My Harbor Freight 1x30 was my first and still going. That was close to 10 years ago.
I made up a plug in cord with switched outlets.
Since the switches are cheap construction, I leave on, and use the basic light switch to turn on and off.

I do have a row of them. [emoji3526]
    All 1x42 that I paid from $25.00 to $50.00
My Belsaw one was $50 and got a bunch of belts. Belts were old and I did have issues with them separating at joint.

You should consider a 1x42 belt sander.
Big difference from the harbor freight model.
Delt made a really nice one with a disc sander.
The Foley Belsaw is my favorite and I have a few.

Re: Help repairing a 1 x 30 Harbor Freight belt grinder

I pulled the wheel off my new grinder to see if I could do it. Came off with a gear puller after I removed the snap ring. The old grinder was 25 years old but was identical to the new one so I knew it's wheel would come off the same way. I had to put a cheater bar on the gear puller and manhandle it plus block the wheel from moving but it came off.

The spring on the new grinder was way too weak and I wanted to replace it with the one from the old grinder. The new grinder works fine now.

I take belts on and off constantly to change grits either for knife sharpening or prepping a cut/etch piece. HF locked down the rear wheel and wants you to unscrew the tracking knob and retighten it every time you change belts. Completely stupid and way too slow. I wasn't having it. So I loosened the nut that locked down the wheel, allowing the wheel to rotate forward and back by finger pressure. However the new spring for it was way too weak and wouldn't maintain belt tension. The old spring was much stronger and fixed the problem. Now once the tracking is set, it never changes. I can quickly rotate the rear wheel forward, replace the belt and let go. The spring holds it tight.

Help repairing a 1 x 30 Harbor Freight belt grinder

I need to replace the spring on my HF belt grinder. The one that puts pressure on the rear roller to keep tension on the belt. To get at it, I have to remove the rear roller. I removed the snap ring, soaked the shaft overnight in penetrant then put a gear puller on it and it will not budge. I checked for another snap ring and there was only the one. Any ideas?
