I'd go thru all that and just dip the tungsten on the first attempt to add filler. :mad::dizzy:

That's how I do it, but on a grinding wheel, not a belt. Running the drill slowly makes a nice uniform point.

The way I do that is on the Harbor freight 3" mini grinder. It already has a semi-stiff buffing wheel, and does a decent job, but not mirror finish like a dedicated white buffing wheel with compound.

So who would not want to have all their tungstens polished real nice?

Sure is perty.

When using the lower end of the amperage spectrum for a given tungsten diameter, you do get crisper arc starts and less arc wander once the arc is initiated.

Awesome! Makes sense to me.

I think the guys that do it for a living probably look at it and say "BS". They have learned to work with what they have.

It's like Pulsed TIG. I like it. But a lot of guys don't use it or have never tried it.

Or HF start. I can NOT scratch or lift start an arc to save my life.

How long did we weld critical stuff with a standard 60Hz transformer? Now we have adjustable frequency, what, to 240Hz?

If you can do it all with no bells and whistles, I think all the added stuffs will make it even better.

If you can't run a bead without dipping, it probably won't make any difference.

Does anybody agree with that general idea?

We pulsed with our foot before there were computers to do it.

Real welders don't need no stinkin HF.

Yup. I can do things that 20 years ago were not possible, but like most things, it's still 90% WeldOr, 10% weldEr.

If you can't run a bead, you still can't run a bead, no matter how much your machine and helmet cost.

You can't buy experience or craftsmanship, and when you are a craftsman, you're never done learning how to still become one...

In industry doing robotic welding where starts & stops are amortized to the penny on consumables, changing out consumables, etc. diamond ground is still more than sufficient. That video is basically just a waste of extra time to be cool, and that's coming from experience welding at extremely low amp starts on micro welding with injection molds type of intricate welding, where thousandths means a lot.

Ryan, thanks for the input. Yep, all lincoln for me. Once in a while the blue company comes up with something neat but I have been happy with the red boxes.

What kind of freq control do you have? Over 300Hz?
