Is there a color-code system for industrial gas cylinders in the USA?

I know the EU has a color-code system for industrial gas cylinders: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottled_gas

Is there such a system for the USA?

rugrat - yes, that is my experience too. Seems a bit strange not to have a universal color-code system, especially if the gas ID decal on the cylinder neck is worn, or removed.

There is no uniform color system although they do use colors at some places to denote contents.

Have never received a bottle that had a label where you couldn't still see what was in it.

In Australia we're colour coded. They're actually included in the theory exams when going for certs. Can't get it out of my head now.
Oxygen black
Acetylene claret or maroon
Nitrogen French grey
Argon peacock
CO2 light Grey
Etc.
So if you have Ar88%, CO2 10%, O2 2%, most of the cylinder would be peacock, the top part of the cylinder would be light grey with a black band.

I guess if you're getting a 12 pack it's quicker glancing at the colours rather than reading each label.

In USA, no.

Seems like a good idea but my local supplier has not only different colors but different valves. I have to be careful when getting acetylene. Wrong bottle and I need an adapter.

Well yea on Acetylene only. The are two valves installed on >75 cu ft acetylene tanks. The CGA300 is the male threads on cylinder and the CGA510 is the female threaded tank.

Then you have acetylene 40 cu ft B tanks with the CGA520 and a 10 cu ft with a CGA200 on it.

All your inert gases are CGA580 except CO2 and it uses a CGA320

Oxygen is a CGA540
