young motivated female looking to join the industry
Okay, so I knew from a young age "normal" schooling wasn't for me. I can hardly sit in front of a computer long enough to research about welding schools. Ha! So, Naturally getting antsy behind the screen I looked into the "best welding schools in the states" As I'm sure you are all aware of the top 3. I was fooled into thinking TWS was for me, but upon further discussions with actual humans not involved with admissions in the school I don't think it's right for what I want to do.. which is get a job, haha. Anyway I'm new to this forum, I'm from Massachusetts but I was looking to relocate pretty much anywhere. I'm just looking for some insight into any helpful programs throughout the states.

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
I appreciate it but I was actually hoping for some insight on smaller schools. My first pick was Hobart initially but then I didn't want to wait 8 months to get into their program. I know I no longer want to attend TWS but I was hoping for some suggestions for smaller schools. Ones that take time with you. I learn quickly but generally like to ask a lot of questions..

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
Ooor if y'all have any better suggestions. A lot of people tell me I "can't learn welding in a school"
-
Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
Sure you can
Those that will tell you you can't learn welding in a school, probably didn't go to welding school.
You can learn about welding from a book, but you won't learn how to weld JUST from a book
But theory and reading drawings is pretty important too.
Good schools include seat time and allow you additional practice time.

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
Welcome to the forum! Have you looked into vocational technical ("trade schools") or community colleges that may offer welding courses in your local area? That may be a start to your search, it wouldnt hurt to try.

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
even many junior collages have welding classes,
and some places have what is called adult education and offer entry level welding classes, I would suggest a entry level course to see if you like it, and get some basics under your belt, If you like the trade then get more schooling

+1 on Farmboy's comments while you apply for and await entrance to a program of your choice.
Newport News Shipbuilding (Huntington Ingalls), near here in Newport News Virginia, has an absolutely outstanding apprenticeship program. Worth a look see. Earn while you learn.

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
Is there anyone you know that you could ask if they would mind you being with them whilst they work, in return for a bit of welding experience? That would be the cheapest route and you could earn a little too if they see your motivated, School is good but you can't beat hands on experience and i think that's what your really looking for to start

If you check her profile, that maybe her picture shown there.
Did you give any thought of a apprenticeship ? I don't know about your area but maybe check with local unions and see what they say. You may have a opportunity being a female.
Welcome and good luck. :waving:

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
Lincoln electric is by here. Its ok. Wtti in pa is better and new castle school of technology focus's on pipe welding. If you want a job off the bat try joining a union. If you showed up here wanting to weld we would teach you.

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
Welcome. The best thing that you can do is try and find a welder near you who's willing to teach you. That way you can learn from someone with real world experience. It also gives you a chance to see if you enjoy welding before dropping your hard earned money on expensive training. It seems that lots of welders say that it's a better idea to go to a community college or vocational program because it's way cheaper and you learn most of the same stuff.
Oh and welcome to the forum.

She has apparently decided to focus on Florida. Wants out of the house quickly, apparently. This time of year, I'd pick FL also.

I really appreciate the warm welcomes and the input. I did repeat myself in another thread. Just trying to get an idea of where to look and if there's any connections on this forum.
Thank you all

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
Welcome to the Forum Bressjady! Um, even though i'm still in highschool i have done A LOT of research on colleges for welding. Tulsa welding school is where i wanted to go to originally myself. But i will be attending San Jacinto College down in the Houston area. They have GREAT welding programs fora junior college, they actually have so many students coming into their welding classes that they're having to build more welding campuses. But anyhow, i'm probably not the best bet on asking about a college considering i'm still in highschool. But welcome to the Website!

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
I just started welding last week, and I want to personally tell you that the amount of information you should know is pretty overwhelming at first. For instance, for the life of me I couldn't figure out why my flux core MIG welds looked bad. Turns out, flux core has a completely different method of using than gas shielded.
Application is a big deal when it comes to welding, but no one wants to be doing it wrong for weeks on end because of all the variables that could be happening. After attempting it on my own, I am seeing how a school would be really good to get in to, but I won't give up if I can't get in to one

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
I'm 24 I have been welding in the uk since school. as good as college and welding schools were, I have met extremely good welder, earning good pay and with all there welding codes who never went to any schools etc (not saying that's the correct path) I had an aim in mind and to do what I wanted I had to pay for evening schools and looses wages having week days off for schools Etc. You can't beat on sight learning Imo, I would say aim for a company willing to take you on, send you to a college and pay for you to learn, after all you would be an asset to there Company I know lots of people doing this.
how comes you got so many hellos! I got 1! ........ It's because I'm a man isn't it.

Re: young motivated female looking to join the industry
Welcome to the forum.
IMO, school will provide information and should guide you on techniques for the welding process, but you will need to practice a lot to become a welder. It would be great if you found someone local, with equipment to practice on... Community college could be a good place to start, it's usually cheap and could give you a head start for a welding school. This way, you might be able to advance and refine your skills quicker in a welding school.
