Looks like you need to adjust your angle a little bit

Wow, that trailer must have a LOT of miles on it to have worn out the inside of the ball socket that badly.

Grease your ball or balls, if you have several.

    lol.
And you did it left handed! Did you really go get a roll of dimes just for that photo?

On steel, try Hastelloy, or ever 308L, you'll love the weld shape. Expensive stuff, but pretty.
An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Yeah it's about 10 years old, get s a *lot* of heavy miles

The balls go get greased but I think that is just part of the issue as there is always dirt/sand/concrete on everything and it just sticks to the grease... and lets face it nobody wants to clean a dirty ball off just before hitching up

    lol.

You should post a YouTube tutorial. I always have the hardest time getting Roosevelt's hair just right. I think it's not enough heat, but every time I turn up the heat, he ends up with a nappy fro.

I recently ordered some Hasteloy W for a project and am looking forward to trying it out.

If I never have to weld Hastelloy again, it will still be too soon.

Forget dimes, I want to see a stack of silver dollars! Teacher in school did a lot of specialty Tig and said Monel was tricky to weld because it had the consistency of butter when it was hot.

Not hardly, more like trying to weld clay. Better put it where you want it, because wherever you put it, that's where it's gonna stay. All the high nickel alloys are like that.

Did the burn of the 'cellulose wrap' provide enough ambient Oxygen
displacement - or did you have to augment with cover gas ?

    And, where is your 'run-off' ledge . . . ?

Building on TimmyTIG's experience, [for the arm chair welder] Nickel
is not a five cent metal
    - it produces super alloys. Nickel maintains
structural integrity to 80%+ of its melting point. This is the metal of
Nukes and Jet Turbine fins [research Hastelloy on your own].

In short - Nickel refuses to conduct heat . . .

Common Stainless [low nickel content] warps, 4 to 6 X compared to
    mild steel . . . because, heat is not wicked away . . .
