I honestly believe that many of these folks that stick or FC weld have no idea what slag is, never mind knowing you are supposed to remove it after welding

I wish the ratchet jaws would shut up so that we could see more epic pictures. That's the reason I came into this thread, to see the pictures.

These are some welds on a sand rail (dune buggy) I picked up a little over a year ago. The previous owner thought "how had could it be?" So he went out and bought a used miller welder, and proceded to "make improvements."
He added a foot rest, but instead of having a tube bent, he miter cut the tube and added some cheap gussetts, and proceded to booger weld it. And just continued to fill in the space behind the gussett. The he added some sort of gas tank mount, and welded and grinded, and welded and grinded, and welded and grinded some more, until he mangled the profile of the tube. It took me a solid 3 days to repair his "improvements".
Owning a welder makes you a "weldor", about as much as owning a stethoscope, maks you a "doctor."

Re: Welding Fail! post pics here.

Sorry, I just had to revive this thread. This came into our shop, I saw it Saturday morning when I came in. One of the guys came up to me and said "Can you tell me if any of these welds have any penetration at all? I'm afraid to keep grinding on it...."

This is a patch job done on the front two (yes both) frame rails of a 1950's era (don't know exact year) Ford truck. The current owner bought it not knowing it was like this. He brought it in to get repaired.
You could tell they had a nice coat of paint over their great workmanship

It was like that on BOTH frame rails. Needless to say, while it was up on the lift, we had jackposts supporting the front end weight too.

If you look closely, you can see the amount of precision was applied to welding on the lower control arm supports...

Re: Welding Fail! post pics here.

Heres the background story. A elderly woman buys a car from a used car dealer/ repair shop. She brings it to us to have a state inspection done the first week of June. The whole rear unibody/ many other places were so rotted that its was virtually unfixable with out reapling the rear clip, both front and rear subframes, rocker panels. To make it short this car needed to become a toaster or wash machine. The dealership told her that we didn't know what we were talking about and that they would repair it. These are the results.

Re: Welding Fail! post pics here.

Now the woman paid $8000.00 for the car and they charged her 200 for materials for this repair. Then they inspected said the car was fine and we were full of s==t. Now I don't have the pics but the front sway bar had ripped out of the front sub and the front sub was broke in half. The rockers got repalced with expand-a-foam. The car was actually less safe then when they started with it and if your thinking hey that looks like tiger hair over some of those welds you would be correct. I hate to see people taken advantage of she should have had it checked over before she bought it but thats besides the point. She called the DMV inspector and needless to say when he is done with these jokers they are going to feel like that grand am got driven up their *** and turned around.
