    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

There are 5 screws that hold the Main Brush cover in place. The top two screw into angled tabs. These tabs are held in place behind the top bolts for the Welder bracket and exciter frame.
I tried every possible tool and way I could to access and loosen the bolts. No go.

I had to strieghten the tabs in order to remove the bolts, not a huge deal as long as they dont crack and break off when I bend them back for reassembly

    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

    Now I have a question.
I have removed the 4 bolts that connect the Welder bracket/exciter frame to the generator frame. The Armeture bearing is inside a "pillow block" that the grease cup is threaded into.

This "pillow block" is assembled with 4 bolts. You can see 3 of the 4 bolts beyond the exciter coils in the photo. Also the tube from the grease cup is blocking the fourth.

I installed the puller that i have used to remove the same frame from the armeture shafts on "newer" sa200's. I applied some pressure and got no movement.

I have no desire to break somthing that I cannot replace because I did not ask for help.

Do you know what the propper dissasembley method is for this frame removal?

I've taken on some lost causes in my day, this is quite and undertaking, if you pull it off, and I'm sure you will the reward will be great. What is the earliest version of the SA 200. I mean what year was it first built and what did it have for components?

    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

Wow that is a crusty dog, good luck with the restoration! Wish I could help but I don't know anything about the old SAs. I wouldn't doubt that after sitting so long lots of pentetrating fluid, heat and force might be needed to get the sucker apart. Don't know about the old engine but I'd bet if you can find parts it is repairable, doesn't look like much going on. Wonder if you could run modern pistons/rings in that sucker.

Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Andex, just wanted to thank you for sharing this project. I love seeing this old stuff brought back to life while making it look almost new.

Do you think the notch was a swage to lock the pin in place, creating a lock nut?

    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

jones2780. I thought the same thing, the pin has a small amount of rotational movment but none lateraly. The notch is very straight and clean as if it were machined. No bulgeing as if it were swaged.

I recieved some good info from Kaye at Bills Welder Repair on how to propperly disassemble what I will call the, bearing cage, for now and the armeture bearing. I wont have a chance to get back at it until this weekend. More pic's to follow of course.

Just did a search on " anco nut " and they are still available.

    Cape Cod Gary
I parked it front of all the rest and in the way of others. and it worked.

I will be back at after work tomorrow. Now that Bill and Kaye have given me some good info to dissasemble the " Bearing Cup " I have been itching to get to it.

    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

Good evening all, time for a belated update.
    Finally got at today.
The generator is now removed from the engine.
It took about 8+ hours to get it done but I did not want to rush into it. I had to run to the auto store and purchase a few items to modify into tooling.
All came apart without any breakage. I believe all will be reusable with some time, effort and a good dose of patience. Oh yeah and a wad of cash..
I will be posting the photos with comments.

    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

I could not remove the two side bolts from the bearing cup. The excitor coils were in the way. So they had to come out

This is just to note the size and location should they bag get ripped.

I bag and tag all hardware as it comes off of the machine. I have always been able to put things back together no matter how long it had been since taking it apart. But I am a liitle older and who knows when it will be back together. Months, years ...?

I had to dig up a really long handle chisel, found an old rock chisel and ground a new edge on it. the tab was really tight on the nut

    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

To remove the Armeture nut I picked up an axle nut socket and a short piece of exhuast pipe. miged the two together and off came the nut ,. the nut is 2 1/4 and the socket is 2 1/2 but it is hex with the corners cut off. I was going to resize it a bit but gave it a try as is and it worked. its deffiinately not pretty and will get some mods before I use it again.

I twisted up the bent hook and used a magnet to get the washers out. The grease had them stuck together and to the bearing face.

    Name: DSC01284.jpg

Here is what came out. Bolts, bearing cup, Armeture nut and washers.
I think the washers also act as shims.
