Another step in the rite direction. The crankshaft is out. It took a little finagleing to get the herringbone drive gear to unmesh from its frozen mates

looks like some of those parts are candidates for the electrolytic rust removal , I have been fooling with this lately and it works pretty good.Little investment and it's passive, you dump it into the solution and let it do the work while you do other things, sleep, go on vacation, whatever.

Sure hope this works out well. Does Waukesha still list engine parts?

You sir have the patience of a saint! In fact, if you get this thing working, it'll be a miracle... we'll have to write the pope!

I'm willing to bet if you have issues with the coils or any of the electrical bits a motor rewinding shop can help you out. Wouldn't be cheap but it'd be worth it.

I have been considering the electrolysis treatment for awhile myself. I just haven’t taken the time to give it a test run. Of course I could not start out with a 5 gal bucket and some smaller less valuable pieces. Oh no, I was thinking more on the lines of a plastic 55 gal bucket etc..... I can see it now, "what’s that mess in the tub" Don’t worry honey the hydrogen will float away and not bother a thing.

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement and suggestions.
The Pope, Some may think I need a blessing to keep out of the nut house. And like all things restored the miracle is maintaining the patience and perseverance to complete the task. The two most expensive items are Time and Money. Both of which I have to budget wisely in order to get it done.

    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

Sunday I was able to return and actually complete the motor disassembley.
There were only a few things left to free from the grip of corrosion.
1 piston, oil pump, camshaft, idler gear and to find whatever is holding the governor in place.

it took a lot of scraping rust, wire brushing and tapping back and forth but #2 is finally free to join the rest of the quadruplet’s.

It did leave behind the worst pitting in the cylinder wall. Rite at the bottom of the stroke where the rings will stop.

Again more tapping with the little ball peen hammer and the oil pump is free. Now that it's free of the cam it still spins.

    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

The Waukesha manual states to remove the camshaft, remove the cam retainer bolts and slide the camshaft out of the block. This is not that difficult when the cam is free and will rotate so that you can access the bolts. But the cam is locked in tighter than a .. so I figured I would pull the gear and get at the bolts. The first attempt showed me that there is very little on the gear to get a hold on and I had great misgivings about the gear cracking or chipping. So I did everything but apply heat as I did not want to melt the bearings. Alas to no avail. It was time to go for broke and pull the gear. It really didn't want to come off but finally did.

The governor is free. No extra bolts or pins. it was just a tight fit to the front plate and some corrosion holding it in place. Lucky it didnt get jarred free and land on the ground in pieces.

The Idler gear, again the manual says to remove the bolt and slide it off of the stub shaft. Of course the the bronze bushing isn't spinning on the shaft so I removed the stub shaft with gear.

Next was the front plate. Nothing fancy just three bolts and a dowel pin.

Oil pressure relief spring removal. It took a lot of carefull digging to free the spring and checkball. The check ball was really difficult.

Like all the iron in this motor it looks rough but will probably polish up quite nicely.
As this is a low rpm motor a few thou off the lift of the cam wont be noticed. This motor was used in a lot of different applications and I am sure that there is a cam out there for it. Will the cam profiles be the same ? But it wouldnt be the first to be sent out and reground.

    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

Now its time to consider the next phase of this quest.
Acquiring all the known needed parts for reconditioning. From whom? and for How much?

The generator appears to be in amazingly good condition for its 77 years of age. But now is time to test it out and consider what should be done to it for its next 77 years. Originality being of prime concern. I can do the basic ohm / continuity tests but what should the values be? This is a little outside my comfort zone and assistance will be needed from those that do have the knowledge.

The Motor is in my comfort zone. There is little that cannot be sleeved bushed or replaced if need be.
But again finding all the needed items is probably going to absorb a lot of time and money. There are a lot of paper thin gaskets between all the surfaces of this motor and some may be quite peculiar to this application.

    Re: 1936 SA200 Restoration

Your idea of the 55 gal drum for rust removal is right move.

Maybe we need to start a needy fund to help out with the cost of this, at least that way you won't have to mortgage the house.

It is a real treat and thrill to look at this each day to see the progress and just how bad this engine condition is. I am amazed at the condition of this engine internally.

Really love seeing this project on there and the info you are providing on history as well !! Those engine covers with "Shield Arc" are my favorite. You need to gold plate those or something lol.
