We are kind of famous in in the sailing community in the area, but I think its more and easier to find work among the work boat fleet (will start weld on a fishing-trawler next week, shrimp sorting system made of alloy) will take some picture when we start. So we have work for maybe a month, but after that nothing in pipeline.
So need to start knocking doors to get work coming.

Cost of living in a big city is much higher than up on the farm, thats for sure.

Brass is what I thought too. Well, CuAl8 is not the wrong filler.

The good news is that aluminum bronze is much more wear resistant than brass. Also, it has a lower melting point than silicon bronze.
The bad news is that the filler still melts at a significantly higher temperature than brass. The suggested method is to use spray transfer.

I don't doubt that your welding skills exceed mine, and I don't want to sound discouraging, but I expect this repair will be difficult. By the time you have it hot enough to melt the filler, the brass will be molten, and smoking, fuming and bubbling out zinc (don't breathe that in), so be quick.

If I were trying this, I'd form some sort of a "mold" that would prevent the brass from running away from me.

Well, if anyone can do it, I'm betting on you. Anyway, $30? Ouch. Have you looked at wichard hanks? Since they're stainless, maybe they'll wear better for you?

Has not been very active here lately. But boat is doing good.
We are running our own welding shop on the side also to finance the sailing part. (plus a farm ofcourse)

We have a sheet metal brake in cast iron with a crack. What is suggested way of trying to weld this up?

Short update. The Farm part is back in business. We have now 600 apple trees on the farm and a bunch of bee hives :-)

We also went sailing on a friends 100 year old wooden boat the other day. Its same as ours but in wood.

The welding business is doing good. We never had intention on making money in industrial world since we are by heart farmers, but its more money into making money welding on other boats than making honey but still interesting. Strangly its not many competitors welding in aluminum in Oslo area so we can charge around 100-120 dollar an hour.
Honey sells for 15 USD per lbs. Plan is to process around 4 tonns of honey at full capacity (that is 100 hives) in 2 years. Not sure if possible to manage to get rid of that much to consumer though.
Long term plan is having this boat roam the seven seas forever with money generating from a land based income.
We learned the had way that even if the wind is free,its kind of expensive roaming around the seven seas.

We also formalize our skills and will take exams in IWE/IWT.. (taking course now)

Sailing the farm

I've bought and refurbished several fiberglass sailboats over the years ranging from an 18 foot lake racing boat to a 32 foot Coranado center cockpit sloop. You spend an extraordinary amount of time in those projects and I am sure that's more than doubled when you do a build from scratch. I haven't done a steel or aluminum hull yet but those have always been higher on my preference list over fiberglass due to the durability factor.

I talked with a guy who had a 50 foot steel hull Ketch Rig that he was selling (price was just a tad out of my budget). He told about how it got washed up onto the rocks during a hurricane in the Caribbean. They basically dragged it back into the water and then sailed to Tobago to have it hauled out and inspected. No major repairs other than cleaning and repainting the hull and replacement of 2 thru hulls that were showing minor leaks. This is why I always had metal hull as a preferred material. A fiberglass boat would have destroyed in this same situation.

I'm still dreaming about retiring aboard my own 36-50 foot steel or aluminum hulled boat and just seeing where the wind takes me. Best of luck on your build project and do keep posting updates and photos as it progresses.

BTW: Have you considered a lateen rig such as are used on the small sunfish sailboats? That style was used for centuries in the med even on boats your size and larger and is easily handled by 1-2 people even when up-sized to a 40 footer.

Not excactly that rig, but i was looking into chinese junk rig for a long time. But in end we ended up with traditional gaff rig setup.

I couldn't find some of those weld pics when y'all were trying to repair engine mounts. If you're doin' welds for others, I hope you've upped your game since then.

hi forum.
been busy welding up the rib dinghy we had onboard from rubber to alu. (of course) This is to avoid some love-sick walrus falling in love with our dinghy and hole it. I used 3mm plates and rolled them. Problem is now weight. Before the dinghy was 33 kg. Now its close to 90 kg. (200 pounds)
This was no the plan. I hoped the weight will not be more than 50 kg so 2 people could get it on deck.

So now i wonder about making another one.. More or less same size but with lighter material.
