Made some more redneck cookware. Actually, I have been watching this guy's videos on Youtube:

    https://www.townsends.us/

He has a series on 18th century cooking, using period recipes and cookware, often over an open fire. He sells most of the implements on his web site, but since I can weld (sort of) I said to myself "Hey, I bet I could make something like that myself!" So with only a thousand dollars or so in tools and materials I saved myself a couple hundred bucks.

Truth be told, I wanted an excuse to buy one of those cheepo Harbor Freight ring rollers.

    https://www.harborfreight.com/gear-d...ler-36790.html

As has been noted here before, that tool leave knurling marks on the workpiece, so when I made the frying pan side I had to grind off the marks. Now I have grinding marks. What the hell, it's a frying pan.

Sanitary Stainless steel fitting with .080" wall thickness welded into a 22ga polished stainless hopper for new single serve hot chocolate drink powder. Used 3/32" gold tungsten with 1/16 " 312 filler.

My holesaw was about .030" oversize to begin with (19mm) which made filling the gap a little bit of a challenge.

I don't think 312 is rated as a food grade stainless.

Little gate repair today 1”x1” 1/8” wall tubing

Has the ole lady helper today. She’s a fine picture taker.

I cut all the crooked bits out of there

    Cut some new stuff

Clamped it in place so my picture taker could keep her hands clean.

Spread a little peanut butter here and there.

Then just like that she is primed and ready for paint.

No, I didn't , used some aluminum backers. It is a bit of a rush job, and the other argon tank was three buildings away. I should probably buy a dual output regulator/Flowmeter. Weldmonger has one that seems reasonably priced.

The fitting is 304, and the hopper is unknown, but probably 304 as are most of the dry food ingredients machinery my company has purchased. E308 would have been the correct filler wire to use.
I couldn't find any 308 in the shop where I was working other than the 5/32" stick welding rod. 312 is a High Ferrite wire, and in situations with high temp, and or corrosive liquids there is the possibility of rusting. Its been passivated, and monday will go for cleaning, and sanitizing. Its an alkali cleaner followed by an acidic sanitizer Peroxiacetic Acid (dilute). Its a mixture of Vinegar, and Hydrogen Peroxide. If we don't show rust there we'll be good to go. I have used 312 before in pinch, and usually on the cracks in the tanks that have fittings sticking out from thin wall container, and or have shakers. There are no materials that are not food grade like lead cadmium, or arsenic, in the msds. just less corrosion resistance. The main uses for 312 listed are for castings, and armor plate, where post weld cracking is a problem.

Monday I'll order some 308 tig wire, and some argon.

Made some more progress on the outboard bracket. My helper, Jesse, got a lot more of the welding completed. And we have the swim step top plates ready to install. Also got a chance to try out the new iPhone 12 Pro's camera. Seems to be quite a nice improvement over the old 5s.

Re: Show us what you welded today

Did this at work this summer. We had to upsize a compressor, but the bigger compressor would not fit because of the bypass loop directly behind it. I welded on extensions to the channel (6011 root and 7018 cover) and drilled new mounting holes. I am not a professional welder, I know the welds aren't perfect. Had to rework discharge and oil lines on right side. Other than sitting a few inches out than the other compressors you would never know. I had fun doing this one.

The thickness is way overkill and probably unnecessarily heavy. No pre-heating involved. Construction is 1/4" 6061-t651. Tube is 1-1/2" od x 1/4" wall. Mounting flange is 3/8" x 2-1/2" flat bar. Aft vertical corners of tub are 5/8" rod.

Wow. I’d be using preheat. Your probably just brazing that aluminum in my opinion

Running a Miller Dynasty 200DX at wide open throttle (showing 195-amps) so I think it is slightly better than brazing. Seriously, should I be concerned? My helper is a certified welder.

Re: Show us what you welded today

Yes that job takes over 300 amps probably without preheat. 200 with out not a chance!! The guy bumped the tungsten about 12 times too. Maybe a couple but not that many meaning he’s not very good. Failed bad on the weld on the bottom pic to the right on the tube. Adding rod before the puddle was hot enough or bad rod angle. Possibly wind but that’s a rookie doing that job

I think that weld in the back is a little more challenging than it might appear. I would have trouble getting my helmet close enough to use my cheater lens, and then you gotta get both arms in there while getting a good view of the weld. It looks to me like a very small area to weld in. Is the middle part a casting ? Castings can be difficult wetting out, and often have surprise materials that pop to the surface when welding. Definitely working that Dynasty hard. Is he using a foot pedal or a finger switch ? would like to see what the finished part comes out like, Keep us posted.

    Best of luck

It's an awful lot of metal to heat. Mine is Dynasty 280DX, I believe it's too much mass for my machine. If I tried that I'd either put a great deal of pre heat in it or add 5 CFH helium. 4943 would also help.

My friend uses 75-25 on cylinder heads and says he gets a puddle right away. His mix is 75% helium. Could probably get the job done using that mix and some preheat to get it started using 200 amps. Obviously already done And I’m sure will hold up since it’s a strong looking design
