this is a flitch plate for my black locust beam. the welding was for the floor joist hangers. mostly 8x6.

Started making different aircraft weathervanes. Made from 12 gauge steel, 1”pipe for the base, 1/2” cold rolled for the axle and supporting the axle with a sealed bearing at each end. Welding them up with 1/16” ER70. Last photo is my practice soccer ball with 32 sides.

I tried doing this with old cars but they never caught on. My wife wants me to do a rooster, pig and cow as she says our rural location would support it. Just hard to draw something I don’t have a lot of passion about.

I had to do something like this on our house. The main carrying beam had cracked, and we had to go down in the crawl space, build a temp stud wall to hold the house up, then cut the beam out, and replace it. It looks like you did a very workmanlike job.



Put the temp wall in, then cut the beam out.



Ready for the new beam.

Moving everything in through the hatch. We broke the beam up in 3 pieces for the new install. Only way to do it.



Finally, tweaking it all to give the best results

I stayed in the crawl space, and K'kins was in the house measuring cracks in the drywall, and watching the level on the floor. It all worked out, and survived two minor earthquakes a few years back.

Got the gantry frame done today. Still need to get started on the wheels. I am going to make casters using 15" trailer tires so it can be used in the shop and out on the lot. Our lot is crushed rock so normal casters won't work.

Just 2D. I try to get photos with some light reflecting off the structure and make my drawing to somewhat look like it

I visited the Mooney factory in ‘94. The vertical stab (tail) looks like that because they used the same jigs for both the vertical and horizontals to save $$. Fast aircraft for a single engine piston but very small on the inside.

A simple experiment with steel 3/4 nuts. Getting more comfortable with tig slowly.

I picked up a bucket of those nuts from a scrap yard. Figuring what else is worth making.

Cool!!!! Yeah I know they're small on the inside and slippery when you're coming in too high but still like em' never got to fly in one but always wanted one... still do but I think my list of wants is just too big now to make happen in less than a couple hundred years

He demonstrated himself as a great skier! I knew he could barely see, I couldn't figure it out! I skied well when the sun was high in the sky, at sundown, the contrast of terrain was lost! How was he doing it?

Ben skies by the seat of his pants. He doesn't use his eyes except to miss trees. His feet tell him about terrain.

A lot of truth in that I have to 'braile weld' sometimes... and usually the bead looks great... now if I could just keep the bead on the joint it would be perfect


Kinda had the same problem on a sled trying to keep up with other guys wearing better 'eye equipment' 'braile sledding' didn't work out so good for me at missing trees didn't hurt the sled much but flipped me off it doing 20mph!!! head over heels!!!

A week or so ago I was wondering how often folks find themselves welding by "ear." I had to do a short weld the other day that I could not reach with my gun. I found a small hole, about the size of the square for a half inch carriage bolt, that I was able to stick a 6011 (first time ever using that too, will probably use it more often now) through. I was able to pivot on the flux and do a short run, clean the weld, then repeat. The welds turned out great, just not exactly where I wanted them to be.
