I'll bet good money there's a card catalog by the door just like the library. Need some 1/8 7018 welding rods... "Lemme just check the catalog. Oh, why yes, they are on Shelf D1!!"

And not an ounce of dirt or a single cobweb in sight -- even in the very back of the shelves were surely us mere mortals wouldn't be reaching with the broom!

    This - is a clinical not critical - question . . .

Why dip when welding steel - vs - running stringers.
    I understand the necessity with Aluminum . . .

I ran stick and wire professionally for fifteen years, before
'self taught' TIG - so I'm stringer trained, it comes easy.

I consider dipping akin to MIG like TIG, and generally not
    necessary . . .

I do: non-spec. welding on Steel, SS, and Bronze for looks,
and dipping seems extraneous labor -

    What am I technically missing - by not dipping . . . ?

Good question. Actually, I've been using lay wire technique with a low speed pulse.
The customer specified TIG but also a critical dimension and minimal distortion, which on 3mm s/s box section is quite difficult. Full penetration is unnecessary so i balance heat input with speed, and preset on the table. I've done plenty on plain DC and it's fine but it puts more heat in. The pulse helps, and the customer likes it.
I have many hundreds of trestle legs like these to make for a can manufacturing line, and it's good money, although boring.

These have been coming out perfect within 2mm critical mostly.
Tbh I still remember you pulling me up on big ugly start-stops about a year ago, and it's never left me. It made me try harder to get it right

I will be putting a chuck on the end to hold pipe it’s adjustable 180 degrees with fine adjustment. Fits in standard receiver hitch. They are used to weld pipe by rolling as your weld.

Here’s a couple of items I drew and cut out with my plasma table. Never like to waste metal so I cut out these dice and did a little TIG practice.

Re: Show us what you welded today

I was able to put my very limited welding "skills" to use for work this past week. The storm that passed through Lake Charles, LA week before last knocked out power to some of our equipment on the I-210 bridge so we needed to quickly get some solar panels up there to continue to power it. We didn't have the time for our normal shop to fabricate the mounts out of aluminum we normally use so I volunteered to put something together to hold 2 solar panels on the side of the bridge ASAP. This sensor monitors the "air gap" between the low steel on the bridge and the water surface so large ships know how much clearance they have.

All we had access to was some 3/16" plate and some schedule 40 pipe so I built this. The solar panels are mounted on adjustable brackets that then mount to the pipes using U-bolts. The plate itself will be mounted to the concrete bridge railing with some 1/2" stainless studs drilled into the concrete filled with epoxy. It's definitely heavier than our standard aluminum mounts but not too bad. Ended up around 45 lbs. I painted it with Rustoleum "aluminum" color so at least it looks light..

Had to do some more railing repair and 'toughening' at one of the local airports warehouses this morning...

Added a bunch of these tiebacks to the railing sides without any 90's on them .
    Using .030 fluxcore -11 wire on my miller 211 running from the 17.5KW through a 50 foot 12 gauge 120vac cord... power 5 wfs~40

For the angles I just used my little milwaukee metalcutting saw to zip off 1.5 inch wide pieces of 2X2x.125 iron.

Tensegrity table made from 2 x 3 11 gauge tubing. Tension beams are 1/4”. Beams bend a little if I stand on the table so might have to make them out of 3/8 plate. Have a couple of ideas for the top, either a a Gadsden flag snake, a snake wrapped around an AR15 or a flaming skull inside the HD logo shield. TIG welded everything mainly because I enjoy it and I definitely need the practice.

I really want to build something like that might add my own 'twist' to it

For today's second job I got the railing fixed that didn't have time for yesterday.... when it was NOT raining...
First thing was to cut out the bad/bent parts
    Name: auburn-aport-door47-railrep-1.JPG
Views: 703
Size: 166.4 KB

Then get the attachment points welded back in with a bit more reinforcement and put some structural quick patch concrete on it -- had to 'make' some forms to support the quick patch using some floor cuts I had from a job this morning, I cut up a piece of industrial flooring for 'mold release' and shims And wouldn't you know it... the second I get the welder powered up... it starts raining

Then get the vertical placed in.
    Name: auburn-aport-door47-railrep-3.JPG

Voila!!!! all done with less than 8 buzzes form the DC wirefeed AC would have been shocking to say the least!!! I guess it's time the start keeping the popup tent in the truck again Because it's bad enough welding in the rain... but trying to place concrete is a real biotch!!!

Nice repair. So you saved the balusters, bottom rail and return. Pretty impressive. With as many as you do, do you keep extra rail or have any prefabed around. I seem to recall you saying you have some tread? Do they send you photos or do you make a site visit or just show up prepared to work.

Thanks, usually they will send a pic or two... but they're kind of useless other than to show sort of the extent of damage... it works best if I show up and look at the job ahead of time then i can actually see and measure what I will need... because when 'they' build these railings they'll use just about any combination of materials imaginable
Yes, I was able to save the lower and balusters... mainly because I was running late and fabbing all new would have probably doubled the time... although would have looked better
I do have a *lot* of 'cheats' that I've figured out through the years which helps speed things along for a one guy crew

This is the first rail(that I can remember) that used a 1-1/2 X 1/2 C-channel on the bottom..most of the others use a 1 inch or 3/4 c-channel down there when the top rail is 1-1/2.. and this one used 1/2 sqr balusters a lot of other use 5/8ths some use 3/4's

I have a couple concrete treads left that are repairable but the local guys that used to make them quit... so they are getting scarce!!! I try to save them when we have a demo job that involves removing a set of stairs. A lot of the warehouses are moving to prefab aluminum units for the fire exits and roof access ladders which is a good thing because ever since the advent of everyone using the 'ice melt' a few years ago the concrete is just disintegrating left and right

Just looked at the times on the pics... I cut the bent railing out at 11:42 and did the last weld and paint at 3:00 so it took me a bit over 3 hours.. in the rain and another 30 minutes to pack the truck and get out of there not too bad for also having to do 4 good sized concrete patches on the steps and landing... in the rain

Ooh. Nice. The Kubota/NH dealer left one here for a few days to demo about 20 years ago. It was awesome and ran circles around our JD Gators but I was too cheap to switch over.

Just gave this 2001 Gator a full service and waiting for new shocks. Will put it up for sale soon.

Maybe a couple of used augers. I’ve seen cheapo/wimpy electric post hole diggers brand new for under $100.

Or you can send Sid up to twist smaller stock .....

    Thanks for the offer

I actually have plenty of cad programs I draw stuff in and a couple plasma tables and a couple small lasers cutters... etc... just hard to find the time to do fun personal stuff these days I was thinking more along the lines of a more twisted support system Sid can help with that one!!! If I even can get him back from up north... he seems to think the Canadians are more hospitable than me

A little apprehensive about posting my project here but what the heck.

I got tired of my 4x6 bandsaw teeter tottering from side to side when I tried to move it so I carved up some 1” .060 wall tube that I salvaged from a Gap store display table. Thought it was painted, turns out it’s powder coated.
Took a bit to sort out the settings in my Millermatic 130. Welds look awful but they will hold.

Still need to add some brackets to hold down the saw, casters and a chip tray.
