    Spoolmatic 30A

I have a first generation 30A spoolgun and right below the knurled driveroll is a copper "spring". It appears to have broken off from wear, no surprise after several hundred rolls of wire. Anyway I checked with my LWS and they said Miller discontinued this part and they didn't have a part number . I was wondering if someone Knows the part number and where I might find one . Thanks in advance.

I think the part you are looking for is 146 558 current pick up. Miller4less has it for 15.39. You should check the part number in the parts breakdown. You can download the owners manual from millers website, you will need the serial number.

Good to hear . Is the serial number on the right side with the gun pointed away from you . If so that area is worn away so most of the printing cannot be read .

That part number is from 1991 parts book then they change around 93 if you know the year you can make an educated guess. 1994 part number 162 042 superseded by 209 342 $19.29 at miller for less

Thanks for the replies. Should the roller wheel that goes against the knurled roll have a groove in it. I replaced it and the knurled roll about 2-3 years ago and I cant recall if it had a groove or not .

We have a pretty good Miller repair facility ( Mosinee Machine ) not to far away and he probably would have the part if it is still current . Do you know of anything to check out as far as the tips burning back on startup ?

Keep all the fasteners snug. I have seen a number of 30As ruined by arcing from loose fasteners.
Those current contact pick ups come three to a bag and come with lube.

If its a little sticky, hit it with some dielectric grease in a spray can. Usually, the bore in that aluminum arm that slides onto that pin goes to crap before the bearing idler wheel does. If its getting real loose, just replace it. They get sloppy after a lot of use & don't tend to work as well.

If you're running it off a WC 24, I've been told there's a tiny potentiometer inside it for run in adjustment & is preset from the factory. I'm guessing you're running off the 252 tho. The wire speed control acts as a run in control when the spool gun is connected if memory serves.
I checked out the run in settings today and on the 252 there is a percentage of wire speed before the arc like 25-150 percent . My setting I believe was factory default setting at 50 percent. I changed it to 95 percent and it was like a night and day difference . The spoolgun was originally on a 250x which I don't think is adjustable so I thought nothing of it .I went through 6 lbs of .035 4043 wire and had only 2 minor burnbacks which I was able to unclog and use the same tip. Previously I was real lucky to get a tip to last for a spool of wire which really only happened when I was doing longer welds. As far as the spring I should have it Friday or Monday. Thanks for all the help .

Yup. $20 "Small Order Charge" for anything under $100. Used to be anything under $50 which was a lot easier to make happen.

    Re: Spoolmatic 30A

I got the new spring today from my LWS , $10.55 with tax. It came with some kind of grease or antiseize, I put some on the driveroll end and some on the screw . All went good, replaced the knurled roller as well. It seems to have a hotter arc now and the run in is even smoother than after resetting the run in ratio. Should be good for a few hundred pounds of wire again. Thanks again for those that helped.

    Re: Spoolmatic 30A

I have a rookie question. What polarity does the 30A run? I have one which hasn't seen use in a long time, and I forget. Thanks!
