    Rebuilding Old Welders

    Hi All,

I have read some posts on here of guys that rebuild old (antique) welders. I found an old one in the Ottawa are which is about a 3 hr drive from home. Guy wants $500 for it but I haven't talked to him.

I need to do a bit of research! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Looks like it is of this vintage: http://www.millerwelds.com/about/1945.html

I had one similar to that but it was the AEA 200LE (electric start) and newer than what is pictured. The recepticles were mounted on the generator control face with the amp adjustment sockets. I liked that machine and only reason I got rid of it was parts were getting hard to find, not that it gave a lot of trouble though. When I sold it in the late 90's I got $900 for it and the buyer didnt bat an eye at the price. 'Course with todays economy, I dont think it would bring near that much. Worth $500, maybe, maybe not. What's it worth to you, and how much are you willing to spend?

    Re: Rebuilding Old Welders

Don't get me wrong, I have no intention of paying $500 for something like this. That is just what the ad was asking. I MIGHT pay $300 just for the historical coolness. It is also a 3 hr drive from home. Problem for me is that I live in a smallish town and there is no market for stuff like y'all! Anyway, I thought it an interesting post, hard to believe it is running well, a testament to Onan and Miller.

Yeah I wouldnt pay $500 either. IMHO not worth it. Too old, not that great of shape, and manual start. They were good machines in their day though!

Does anyone know if you could mate a newer engine to one of these welders? One I have welded great and have always wanted to get it going or find another portable but the need has not sparked the interest or $ even though I have had the need for one a time or two this past year.
