That single low grade bolt is also a HINGE POINT...sideways in this case. When he hits the brakes or goes around a corner...that assembly is going to swing to one side or the other...

Same idiots, same place, same trailer (two different trucks over time)...they pull it there every day. I don't know how they can drive there every day and never get pulled over for being so grossly overloaded but it's there day after day for months now. It seems like half the time I see someone pulling a trailer something is wrong....and nobody cares that they put everyone else on the road at risk.

Saw a good one earlier tonight but didn't think to get pictures. Wife and I was driving down a street in town and there was a pickup pulling a goose neck trailer loaded with the large round hay bales in front of us. We kept our distance as we followed it about a half mile as the bales were not secured and the bales on the top were rocking back and forth badly, but then we turned at an intersection to drive to our destination. We were only at our destination a few minutes and we decided to drive back to the route the truck was taking when we last saw it. We thought if it made it to the highway which was only about 3/4 mile up the road, if it hadn't lost any bales by that time, it surely would after it got on the highway. We made it to the highway intersection and hadn't seen it yet, but within less than a mile up the highway there the truck and trailer set just off the road and one of the bales had rolled off and was several feet away from the trailer. Sure glad it hadn't struck any vehicles when it rolled off the trailer.

The things that make me wonder ?

1) It looks like he's using the 1-7/8" ball, and most of the paint is still there. Probably a small trailer, of log splitter ?
2) Possibly a 3/4" x 6" bolt, has some marking on top, probably Grade 5. Looks larger than the 5/8"pin in the hitch. ?
3) He has a pin lock for the ball hitch ?
4) how long did it take him to find all the parts at Tractor supply and to figure out that the 2" ball adapter would fit inside the 2-1/2" ball adapter?

I don't think he'll ruin more than one trailer, it might stay in place for a while. Once the bolt gets loose, and the and the trailer begins to swing, they'll more than likely hit the brakes. When they hit the brakes, the hitch will swivel hard into the plastic license plate light, and the chrome sheet metal of the bumper. I think the damage would get his attention, but you never know. The fact that its black, and protrudes 24" out from the tailgate, and about 16" off the ground make it knee cap ready. I have a 3/4 ton dodge, and when I forget to take my hitch out, I still catch it every now and then. Mine is still the factory receiver. Not a good idea, even if its just to use moving a small trailer in the back yard. It migh work a little bit, then they'll get brave and moving something big on the Highway.Might be smart enough to be dangerous, too dumb to care.

My cousin's boy (17y.o.) guided his dad back to the trailer and proceded to hook it up. Lights, chains, jack, latch pintle (uh oh). I rode shotgun to pick up a tractor. Over 70 miles to get tractor. Dropped the ramps and I made it up to top of ramps with front wheels and pop goes the weasel. Trailer came off the pintle hook and rolled up under the truck. This was about 3 months ago. It was awesome.

Twenty some years ago my uncle had a boat he kept in the water. In winter It lived on dry land, near where it was docked. Nearest boat ramp was 6 miles away. Spring & fall it had to be transported by trailer. Three of us were involved. I had the truck, but these were experienced men you could count on to do it right. One trip they failed to latch the trailer winch. I lost the boat part way to the ramp. Still hitched to the strap, I believe I dragged it a few feet before getting stopped. Damage was light scratching of the underwater part of the hull.

A few years later, time had passed. Thousands of uneventful tows without problems, I wasn't on my toes. I towed an empty trailer to the boat ramp. As the boat came up the trailer, the coupler popped off the ball. A new van got its first ding.

Now one person, the driver is responsible for checking all aspects of the hitch.

I had a customer show up to drop a boat off with a similar situation. Somehow he managed to close the coupler latch on top of the ball, instead of around the ball, and tows it 50 miles to my shop. Made it just fine, and he had no clue until I went to unhitch it for him.

That one is more a case of 'ya do what ya gotta do' when he lost the pin. With no chains or wiring there's no evidence that this will go on the highway where its a hazard to to others. He's just pulling some implement around the farm. But it looks like he could have made more welds between that tab and the trailer structure.

Shame to botch up a good wrench.

lol..I had a farmer that hayed one of my fields on a steep grade and whatever he used for a pin in a chopper wagon let loose..that wagon went down the hill, crashed through about 50 feet of trees and stopped in the middle of the road in a pile of scrap metal, luckily no car was coming..the town had to come with a pay loader to push it to the side till he could flat bed it home..total lose on the wagon it went end over end as it went down hill..
