Ok was just looking at hypertherm online and they suggest shielded consumables.

The standard consumables for the powermax45 are designed with both drag and template cutting in mind. Since the parts are shielded, the template can be made of conductive or non conductive materials, and there will be no affect to consumable life....with the added benefit that the torch does not stick to the plate. Here's a pic of the front end of my powermax45, and another showing the use of a piece of 18 ga steel as a template (carbboard and plywood work very well also).

There is no need for shielded consumables on any Hypertherm systems that produce less than 30 amps....under 30 Amps drag cutting is fine for non shielded. The newer Powermax30 is unshielded as well.

Yup, I drag cut with aluminum templates all the time with my PM30, I haven't had a problem yet.

Yep that drag cutting sure beats trying to maintain a 1/8' gap with shaky hands from old age or freezing cold with your gun aiming everywhere.
