And most people wonder why petro fuel is expensive. They have no clue what it takes to get crude to the surface so it can be refined.

    Awesome pictures! Awesome Thread!

I've romanticized offshore welding and offshore work In my own mind. Doing a tough job in very tough conditions or settings many won't attempt.

How does one end up with a job welding on these off shore rigs? Do u need to have any certain qualifications besides like a 3g for stick? Is pipe frequently welded on these too?

On a ship vessel or rig. You are basically on a floating city.
The more you know and understand the better. Should be able to weld wire and stick. Use a torch and understand rigging. You'll need a twic and huett osha safety courses...... It all depends on where you go.
Learn welding in all positions. Understand anything u do for sea going vessel. It almost always gets welded out in place 100% with every corner wrapped to prevent water intrusion.

You need to know a few things to be valuable and not blow the vessel up. A lot can be learned on the job. Most important is understanding safety and being certified in a couple different processes.

    Re: Offshore

I also work offshore, but I am not a welder on the platform, welding is only for hobby.
My job is control room operator on a gas production platform, I also issue and sign the workpermits on the platform.
Total production is about 50 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.......
The platform is about 30 years old now, 30 years ago the wells were new and had a pressure of 8000 psi, production was 500 million cubic feet/day back in the glory days.....

The platform is quite close to shore, so as of this year we are doing the crewchanges with a small tenderboat.

We don`t use a basket/Billy Pugh, no we simply step off the boat onto the platform , a special boatlanding with a new staircase was installed for this.
Offcourse this can only be done if the waves are less than 1m high, if the waves are too high we take a helicopter.

A lot of rigs and platforms have a Fast Rescue Craft onboard which can be used if there is a Man Over Board situation.
Or just for fun , I am behind the wheel of the FRC, you can see "my" platform in the background.

It has a 230hp turbodiesel engine which powers a waterjet, topspeeds is about 30 nm/hour.

Last year we had a visit from a Search and Rescue helicopter from the dutch navy on the platform, they did some practice landings.

With a female doctor and pilot

    bluemoon,

Having worked off-shore with quite a few Dutchman and having gotten to spend some time in the Netherlands on route to and from a job I know how much you guys like your water craft (of all sizes). Hell man, even when you're on-shore it seems you're never more than a few meters from a navigable channel.

    Met vriendelijke groet.

Huet training (Helicopter Underwater Escape/Egress Training), it`s a small videoclip I made with my phone.
They had windows in the walls of the pool, so I could film my colleagues
Click on it, and you will see the video on PhotoBucket.

    Helicopter firefighting training.

Youtube video of the HUET training at Falck in Lafayette, LA

Another pic of our FRC boat.

And the boatlanding/stairs that we use to climb aboard the platform when we arrive with the crewtender I posted earlier.

I used to be a pipefitter onshore, I worked at construction yards were they builds rigs and platforms, and at pipingshops.
Suddenly I thought it was time for a careerchange, so I started to work offshore , more vacation/free time and it pays better
