there's nothing like striking while the iron is hot. i busted out the heli-arc and cranked 'er up this am. i gotta hit the lws for tungsten and filler and unclog the water cooler but i'm on my way thanks to zap.

steve; it's a lincoln square wave tig 350. the water cooler's been sitting for about 10 years and isn't working right but i'll make one if i have to or connect the machine to city water.

Wow Joe, way to go bud, didn't take you long to get the feel of things. Just so you guys know, Joe has been a structural stick welder for his whole life basically, and never tig welded once before Saturday. But when you can read a puddle, you can read a puddle! Awsome Joe!!!!

I've had an epiphany! Do you remember the tray I brought in? Aluminum 6061 16 gauge 48" x 32" x 3" the long sides were bent 90 degrees in a metal brake, the short sides were welded in. It is the bottom of three trays that will be supported by a frame to form a tool cart. A 5 x 28" hole was cut from the flat bottom along each side, and a three sided 3" x 28" for each surrounding the hole. Horse sulky wheels will occupy the holes. Each of the trays has outside corner weld beads 32" long. The bottom tray has a bunch of long beads. As welds and heat affected metal cools it shrinks. In this case it shrinks a lot. My flat tray curled substantially. I tried making cuts perpendicular to the bead to relieve the tension, then fill. This didn't work.
I tried again, tacking the corner joints at one inch intervals, then cutting at 4 " intervals with a power hand saw with 5" aluminum blade, The cuts are perpendicular to the joint, and about 1" into each piece of sheet metal. Then I welded the long bead skipping around allowing one to cool before welding another. Success! very little warping!

mike; never you fear guy's; i may forget what i had for dinner last nite but haven't forgotten the tig basics zap taught us. i'm just getting the cobwebs out of the machine and testing it out. i'm bring in my wife's industrial size jug of nail polish remover and going to the lws for a stainless wire brush, filler and red tungsten. ugh, that was 1/16" right? lol

Try 2% lanthanated, it works as well, but isn't radioactive. I found 4" pads for a grinder from Norton (Blaze), and others. Sears, Home Depot, Some welding supplies. I think they are intended to strip paint. They are slick for taking just the dirty layer from metal, especially nice on aluminum. Don't wear them down all the way if welding aluminum. I think the adhesive that holds abrasive to backer pollutes aluminum for welding.

Is it possible you have a blockage in one of the lines? We have a Longevity cooler at work that works when it wants, had been sitting for a while and the pump was all gummed up. Probably not the reccomended practice but they added some metalworking coolant to the water and ran it through the pump. Had to spin the fan blade by hand to get it freed up. Emptied the coolant out and filled back up with water. Works fine now. On ours the fan is attached to the pump and kind of lets you know if its pumping by the sound.

I DON'T KNOW IF I WOULD TRY THIS ON AN EXPENSIVE PUMP!

When I bought a new welder, it took a while for the cooler to arrive, (back order), I ain't waiting that long to try out my Dynasty! A stroke of luck, the sink was 2' away. I cut a washing machine hose, it fit perfectly over the cooler fitting. I secured it with several tight wraps of electrical tape. I didn't have a second hose for the floor drain, I used a bucket. Opening the valve a trickle, I found cooling to be effective. I had to empty the bucket about once in two hours. I now have the cooler, but don't really know why I bothered. The cooler is like having a lawn mower running all day. It's annoying. Sink water never gets hot, makes no noise and in my case, uses no electricity, and is free.

I have a question for Zap. How often do you spoil your tungsten welding aluminum? Analyzing my experience more often I dab filler, a teardrop shaped glob melts and as I pull away the tail melts almost instantly flipping its "tail" touching the tungsten. ARGHH! I hate the interruption of changing tungsten!

I try not to contaminate at all cost but as you saw last Saturday during tacking.....well sh!t happens but don't be discouraged....

THE SECOND it happens stop...hit the area with a stainless brush change your tungsten and continue....

If it was easy everyone would be doing it.........Right?
