Got a chuckle reading post #6 about looking at the engine at night for sparking electrical wires for shorts to ground. I have an Onan generator with a "57" Continental 162 engine and when viewed at night it looks like a bunch of lightning bugs dancing to the tune of "Hot Rod Lincoln" recorded back in "59" by Johnny Bond. Best regards, Bob

Not sure if you ever found a solution.
I just wanted to add a note.
    I have a 78' sa 200 and 84' sae 250,
When the mag went out on my 250, i decided to go ahead and swap to distributor..long story short, there is no more idle cough/hiccup. Runs very very smooth.

I second the vacuum gauge suggestion. You can tell a lot about an engine with a vacuum gauge. I use the port on the intake for mine. Here's a good page on how to interpret the readings:

Have you tried burning a few big rods? I've heard that putting a good load on it will help clear it up of any carbon build up if it has any.
