    Re: Blacksmithing tools

I spent a little time mocking up a stand for that post mount blacksmith vise last night.

The plan at the moment is to make it equivalent to a modern day bench mount drill press.

I grabbed a disc brake rotor out of the scrap pile to be used as the base. Hopefully it will add a little style...

    Re: Blacksmithing tools

That's going to be seriously gorgeous!

I love how the lines of the shield plate compliment the brake disk's lines. It took me a minute to realize that was just a old car part!

The only thing I'd suggest doing different would be to use square nuts and plain washers instead of the new shiny stuff. Even if you have to make the nuts from some square bar, I think it'd be worth it just to add that little bit of "something different" and keep the old-world look.

I have a old disk out in the shop and will definitely have to keep this in mind. That'll make a wonderful little table-top drill base!

Thanks Vaughn. Good advice as always and this is the PLAN!!

I have a small inventory of new and used square head fasteners just for occasions such as this.

Those hex head bolts in the mockup were used only because they are convenient for temporary use.

I’m getting a little closer with the stand for my new cordless drill press.

I wish someone was paying me by the hour on this...

That's sweet. I picked up one of those set up with an electric motor years ago at an auction. The handle came with it, but it's ugly compared to the one you made. I had planned to attach it to a metal stand as well, but... well.... you guys know how my builds tend to look more like a pile of junk. My plan was to put the handle back on and use it for tapping threads. The PO had put a modern chuck in it as well.

    Re: Blacksmithing tools

My idea for a frame was a little "different". My complaint with this design ( and drill presses in general, really) is the lack of throat room for working on larger parts. My plan was to construct a frame that would hold the press securely to the wall, and quite high, so it would just clear my 7' ceiling. The frame would hold it about 3 ft. from the wall and there would be no base under the press. The base would then be constructed as a scissors lift table with "arms " that would attach to the frame on the wall and make it secure to the press. It should also have some kind of X/Y activity for fine tuning, but it would allow for drilling on much larger parts, both horizontally and vertically.

Love the newel post cap! That's just the right finishing touch!!

Les, I like your idea to use one for larger/deeper drilling. If you do it right, there'd be no problem getting an engine block under the thing! You'd have to make it something like one of those old radial-arm presses, but that wouldn't be too hard with a bit of I-beam and some rack/pinion gears.

    Re: Blacksmithing tools

Diesel engines and big transmissions is what I had in mind... but then again maybe that's just a good argument for a really good mag drill...
I remember years ago reading about a shop that made an English Wheel for large panels by using the shop itself for the frame. The bottom pedestal was held by a block of concrete cast into the floor, and the top was secured to an I-beam in the ceiling. It could basically handle any size sheet that would fit in the shop. I always thought the concept was interesting when I started thinking about the limitations of other machines.

Around here they call that a “PROJECT “. Where you live in the land of ice and snow they probably call it “second week of March.”

50 percent longer than the previous brushed motor version.

Remind me to include a vertical receiver into my next welding bench. That's looking really good. Does that old bolt tightening style push the small bits to one side and increase runout? Or do they self-center?

It makes a normal twist drill work like a step drill for enlarging holes
