LOL.... I do consume the occasional hoppy brew, but I keep telling people 2 million natives can't be wrong! Right now I keep getting sidetracked by the 2 miles of maples leaning out over my fields trying to eat my GPS antennae, but I plan to revive the welding table thread once it gets cold and nasty out. I thought when I picked up $800 in loose metal I would have a lot left over, now I'm not so sure... it's a hungry beast. I did get lucky on the top at a farm auction, but I sure wish I knew what they cut it with... I can't even scratch that stuff with a new cobalt bit.

I've found that leaving them in the back of a truck bed so the rain keeps them moist will keep the handle tight in the head of course they tend to rot off after a season or two.... so there is that

I was going to make a joke about your beer of choice, but then i saw you were from California. Don't want to kick a man while he's down!

For the record, there's only one proper beer for a blacksmith --

Don't feel bad if you can't get it locally. They only sell it in the tri-state area around PGH, and even I can't source it. You'd think they'd make an exception for me, but nope.

The upside is that when you can get it, it makes you a better person. You can even get "IC Light" if you're watching your weight or need to concentrate on what you're doing at the moment.

And if anyone thinks their logo bears an odd similarity to my new shirt design, I assure you that's purely coincidental. Promise.

Icehouse makes a halfway decent substitute that eases the pains you get from a day of forging.

That's a relief!!!! You wouldn't believe the number of places I go into and see all the screws running around at various angles!!! it's like the electrician didn't give two hoots about anything makes you wonder what he did on the parts you can't see!!!!!

I've actually tried that... it's very good. A lot of people seem to prefer the French's Ketchup though...

A common misconception is that farmers have no taste.

    I'm not picky.

If the bottle makes it home from the liquor store unopened I consider it well enough aged.

True that!! We retired and built a new house about 15 years ago. Out of curiosity, after the electricians had finished, I went all through the house and EVERY receptacle and switch plate had been clocked....true craftsmen. I couldn't stand it after that, and removed the cover plate on the breaker box. ALL the wiring was perfectly aligned, spaced, parallel and bent in concentric curves...blew my mind. Those guys were absolute perfectionists and fast workers to boot.

    Re: Blacksmithing tools

I'm not so much blacksmithing as metal mangling. Grabbed this discarded cylinder from work, cleaned up the plates and welded them to make an anvil.

Today I made this stand for it out of 4x4 tubing and scrap plate cutoffs.

I don't have a forge or torch, I want to try and make little stick figure people for the yard art stuff I make. The block is crazy dense, about 70lbs. The stand is stable if I make sure it is on a flat piece of concrete. If it all works OK I'll paint it and but for now, just happy to have an anvil (at zero cost).

    Re: Blacksmithing tools

Might want to revamp the feet so you have a tripod rather than the flat-footed design. If you keep it as-is, I'd add some gussets so the thin feet don't bend.

Remember, the Sutton Hoo Hoard was made with an anvil not nearly as good as what you have. It's not the size of your tool, but your ability to use it wisely.
