vinegar is also a way to create rust.

These were brand new shoes I sprayed with vinegar and let sit out in the rain. The vinegar won't make them rust until it gets rained on. I don't know why, though.

after it got rusty I just rubbed it down with crumpled up newspaper, wiped it real quick with lacquer thinner, then clear coated it.
got the look I was wanting.

    X2 on the vinegar soak....

Currently working on some yard art for the missus. Making a flower from old horseshoes. These horseshoes were BADLY rusted. Soaked in vinegar for two days, dried off, buffed with bench grinder wire wheel as BD1 says he does with his. They shine like a new silver dollar. Vinegar works great.

I weld the flowers onto a 1/2" rod about 3' long, and add 2 or 3 quick and dirty forged leaves. Will prime with auto primer and she will paint whatever color she wants. Have made a lot like this.

    Horse shoe wind chime.

I used some heavily rusted, but apparently new-ish shoes given to me. Derusted with vinegar, wire brushed on bench grinder.

This one differs from most seen on the internet in that I used whole shoes for the chimes. All the ones I've seen only use 1/2 of a shoe for each chime. I struck those with a steel rod...only made a "tink" sound. I then struck a whole shoe and it made a loud ring. The disk for the striker is scrap 3/16" steel, 3 1/2" diameter, hole drilled in middle with steel rod loops on top and bottom for leather thongs. Tack welded upper pair. Rings bent out of 1/8" rod. Wind catcher made from 22ga. sheet. Holes drilled and counter sunk to prevent cutting thongs. Clear Krylon spray to finish. Takes a good wind to chime due to the mass of metal needed to move. I tried wood, plastic and steel for the striker. Only the steel plate made a loud ring when striking the shoes.
