Boats and a good gun dog seem to do the same thing. LOL
I find it funny how "friends" when they know you can weld and have a welder are always asking for you to do a quick weld or quick fix etc. I don't mind helping out family on repair welds or whatever and friends to a certain extent, but not those so called friends that only seem to talk to you when they want something. And it's always a quick job etc.
Anyone have any funny stories along these lines?

Yup, along with any mechanical skills, computer skills, construction skills, tax return skills, general numerical literacy, common sense, medical and legal skills... and the list goes on.
Or if you own a swimming pool.
Magical friends appear, shortly after its opened.

You want friends! Get a car trailer!

When I had a snowmobile people would show up to ride ,never bring gas or show up to work on it.

LOL!! This thread is going places!!!
Yep, as long as you have something a friend doesn't you'll have friends It's all good though I enjoy helping people while trying to teach them how to help themselves.
The ones that get me are those that are not even friends. I have had total strangers come and ask me if they coud borrow my utiity trailer, in fact I had one that wanted to borrow it for a whole year , he was moving and wanted to use it to move but would not be back in the area for a year. I have had complete strangers ask to borrow my mini excavator , the list of people wanting me to weld something for nothing is never ending.
I don’t have a problem at all doing projects for friends. Lucky for me I have very few friends! Now my wife’s family charges me for everything. I built these wood stoves. One for us, and one for my wife’s oldest sister. Took them to work to sand blast, my brother-n-law cried like a little girl over how much sand I used, and had to replace. I use to have a F-550 with dump bed. I took them over 2-cords of wood. Dumped it in their drive way, my brother-n-law said "it’s not split"!
I've got a buddy that got a new Harley back in about 05 or 06, he brought it to work & one of the guys asked if he could take a spin on it, Big Chuck just looked at him & replied "how about I take a spin on your wife"! It shut him up & he walked off with a red face & his head hung low.

If I haven't already let the air out of one,I tell them they can borrow it in a couple of days then show them a flat and say it need's a tire when they return to pick it up. 100% of time they pass and go some place else. Dis-connected starter wire and suggestion they might need a mechanic work's as well.
An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Had some laughs reading the replies. I don't mind helping out good friends but helping out acquaintances who you barely talk too is different. I can't believe the strangers asking too borrow things. I borrow things the odd time from a neighbor etc but it always get's returned in the same or better shape than I got it. I really try not to borrow things as a rule.
