A set of book ends made from various gears and sprockets. They all turn or rotate.

Candle holder made from pistons and valves. The valves have the Chevy emblem on them. I am not sure where the pistons came from.

Awesome work! Nice adaptation with gears, pistons, and valves. GrindOn.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

Since I made a candle/bottle holder using Chevy valves, I had to make one using Ford valves. I also made a business card/pen holder from a connecting rod. I will probably add a small clock or round picture frame inside the larger hole. The timing gear and chain is just a piece of wall art with a Ford badge I found on the side of the road.

after seeing all the stuff that you can do with scrap metal, I can't wait to salvage parts from my next repair work on my vehicles. I use to junk the metal parts whenever I'd work on my vehicles, but since taking up this hobby, can now re-purpose this stuff instead. do most people on this site do this for a living, or is it a hobby? a lot of talent here.

A man recently brought me some farm "stuff" and said he could see it becoming an elephant head and wanted me to make it come true. So I did. Here it is.

I just do this as a hobby. It makes enough for me to pay for new tools and I have been fortunate these last couple of years. I started out with only a Miller 175, DeWalt Dry cut 14 chop saw, and 4-1/2" grinder. In the last three years it has allowed me to pay for my Dynasty, Bridgeport, Doall vertical bandsaw, horizontal bandsaw, stomp shear, slip roller, lathe, and a 6x12 enclosed trailer to bring items to shows. In other words, all the money I made went right back to more tools.

I am hoping, and my wife hoping even more, that I don't "need" too many more tools.

Very true. I just keep improving the shop one piece at a time.

    My "need" list:
Real welding table. I currently have a piece of 1/8" plate on top of my table saw.

    My "Want" list:
12'x'32' extension on the back of the shop so I can move all my misc crap out and get my car lift back.
    4'x8' plasma table
Horizontal/vertical rotary table for the Bridgeport
Right angle attachment for the Bridgeport

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

I made this lamp out of a variety of gears, a piston wrist pin and a large wood augur. The gear on top rotates and can slide up and down on the wrist pin.

The bottom two gears were cast so it was a bit of a pain trying to TIG them together since they were cast. I have read on here about preheating and post heating to avoid cracks but forgot to do that since I don't work with cast very much. When I welded the washer on top of the second gear I remembered since I saw some cracks in the first couple of welds. I put the item in front of my hear gun for a while until it was too hot to pick up. I know, not very scientific but as an art piece I can say it adds character to the piece. In addition, there was quite a bit of porosity to the weld. I ended up going back over it to smooth it out and add more filler.

I need to get or make a positioner for items like this since I was having a hard time with my starts, stops and keeping the right angle. I used ER70S on the underside of the first gear and SilBr on the second gear and washer.

I was asked by a customer to make a video showing how some of my bells sound from various distances up to 300 feet away. My dog, Donner, kept barking off to the side until I let him appear in the video.

I was finally able to get some small clocks of the right diameter to complete a few of my piston and car part items. It is the same item as before, but I took pics using different backgrounds.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

I wanted to make a piston clock and small picture holder. In order to do that, I had to mill out the slot so that it could hold two connecting rods.

Once that was done I had to find a clock and picture frame of the right diameter. The inside of the connecting rod is about 2-1/8". I found clocks that fit, but the portrait holder is only 2" in diameter. In order to make it work, I had to find a bushing to hold the smaller frame. I couldn't find any DOM of the right size in my scrap pile so I ran some ugly beads inside the 2" aluminum pipe I had. I turned both the inside and outside diameters to what I needed and then trimmed it to fit.

A test fit on the lathe then the completed clock and picture holder.

These look lame compared to Raderwood, but here goes. A bunch of desk sets or salt and pepper and napkin holders made from remnants of other projects.

A few more pieces for an office type setting. An in/outbox and a "hold" tray or a serving tray. Both were made from a couple of scrap pieces of channel.

Nice office type goodies. What I like it's NOT gonna move or get knocked off the desk like that plastic junk. If it does it may take out a toe.
