Re: Scrap metal art or projects

I am making a garden bell out of an old CO2 tank. Since I am using 4"x4" wooden posts, a standard 4x4 tube will not fit. I bent up some 1/8" plate into right angles and welded them together. Name: 20160319_152322.jpg

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

Even though I have a plasma cutter, I decided to cut the designs in the top plate with a right angle cut off wheel and a jig saw. It was faster for me to do it that way than plasma and grind the dross and errors.

That welding created a bow in the top plate, so tomorrow I am going to try to flame straighten the piece.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

I posted yesterday that when I welded the top rib and bottom ring that the piece became distorted. Today was my first attempt at using heat to straighten out metal. I ended up over doing it on one portion and had to resort to hammering it flat. Overall I was pretty happy with learning how to do it and the results.

Lamp made from parts off old bicycles. It is about 4 feet tall if you make it go almost straight up. The center tube is the tube that goes from a sprocket to the seat on a bike. I cut off the rear forks and forward tubes. The gears and chain rotate.

Would be nice if you could turn the bike pedal to turn the lamp on. just a thought?

That was the plan but i was running into issues with holding the sprockets and still allowing it to rotate

I used an old scuba tank to make a couple of bells shaped like Spartan helmets.

Those helmets look slick. How do they sound ? Does the cutouts have a greater affect on the sound ?

Here is a video of the helmet from the top of the tank. The cut outs do affect the sound and I hoped to show it on the video.

Beautiful! Great concept! This comment was for Kevin Caron's "fly" sculpture!

This is something I did last year. This image is only part of the sculpture, showing a crocodile swimming under a log then jumping out of the water! Name: image.jpg

I'm glad the Mig welds I do are better than the ones on the "Big Time C-Clamp" in the video!

One of my neighbors gave me a pile of horseshoes. I made this bell using one. I am going to give him one like it as thanks.

More nice pieces. I am glad to see you are incorporating copper, wood and other textures or materials. I think they help the look. Maybe you can use some copper flashing or tubing or stainless steel rods or blots to add even more.
