Fred is right. Just got back from a training class at Fronius. They are quite proud our their CMT process. In the above picture the top aluminum plate is welded to the galvanized coating on the lower steel plate. With out damaging the coating. At some point you may see this in cars. Galvanized steel frame and aluminum body panels.
This welding system not only uses advanced welding wave forms, but they move the wire up and down at the same time. Wave form and wire are synchronized.

The CMT Puls wire printing (cylindrical pin, pike pin, print pin, etc) is cool. Wil have to explore the publised polarity/waveform outputs. Familiar with Lincoln's synergistic pulse and pulse on pulse.

Fronius appears to have Gandalf the White at the helm.

Al to galvanized... didn't I see that at a county fair with some of the zinc/aluminum brazing rods?

Hello ccawgc, I was first exposed to this at a welding instructor's conference in Washington state up in the Seattle/Tacoma area, even got to play with running it. I believe that was around 8 to 10 years ago. It is quite impressive and "only" Fronius could come up with it. I believe that a number of high end automakers specifically call out Fronius equipment for repairs to their cars, can't remember which ones however. Fun and informational question. While at their school they showed us a sample of some of the things their machines can do. They can control the arc so tight, they can weld the end of the wire to the plate
then burn the wire in two at a predetermined length leaving a pin sticking up from the metal ( post 5 talked about this ). Connected to a robot this machines can do some amazing
things. One of my customers builds light rail train cars and is switching from Lincoln to Fronius.
Their High end welders are 3 phase only.
