Yes, mine is a (cheap) Hobart clamp. I'm trying to figure out how to describe what mines' issue is...
If I lay flat material on the base, cut at 45 degrees, the two 45 degree cuts match up and all is well.
If I take flat or tube material and place it vertically against the fences, the bottom edge(s) meet up OK, but there is a gap in the top edges. The material is canting outwards off of plumb about 1 degree. Instead of the corner where the fence meets the base of the clamp being 90 degrees, it's more like 91 degrees.
The close-up pic above kind of looked like mine so I figured I'd mention it in case yours is doing the same thing.

Drill and tap for a couple of set screws at the top of the bosses for tuning the angle.

This Strong Hands WK50 has a set screw on the right side horizontal flat for tweaking adjustments. I ordered two more on Amazon so I’ll have a complete four piece set up. Even though one of the four I now have is the heavier duty Bessey.

Still can't see where I'm welding though - I swear I'm finding a theater spotlight and hang it over the bench. These were run with .030 wire, 25/75 gas, 140A at 22.5V. Still more heat and/or larger wire diameter needed?
It's a heavy sucker - I'll say that. Will try to fashion a handle using the two port fittings. I wish hardy holes were round - got 4 of them!
When you need to glue stuff together like that, you need better penetration. By "penetration", I mean a good mechanical bevel. Don't ever think that an arc can penetrate deep enough to tie something together without proper beveling.
See how that deep bevel gives you some meat for the weld to attach to. What you've done is really only scratch the surface. It's no big deal,, but just a bit of a lesson so you can be better. It takes time to pick all this stuff up.

Re: The Official Craigslist Score Thread!
And, in passing...................a deeper bevel helps to eliminate the view problems your having. It gives you very good positive lines, and shadows, to follow as your welding.

Re: The Official Craigslist Score Thread!
Well...... you don't really need that much metal removed for the same penetration..... clamp the plates together and grind a U-groove in there for basically the same penetration with less waste

Re: The Official Craigslist Score Thread!
The mechanical bevel is an axiom for just about any kind of butt joint.
Aside from gapping plates, a full penetration weld requires bevels on both sides of the plate. I usually leave a razor thin land for alignment.
There's two different techniques that I use when filling the bevel. When welding with stick, I like to look at the puddle from behind the rod as I drag it towards me. I simply watch the puddle flow, and slightly wash the puddle enough to lap the sides of the bevel.
When using wire, I like to watch the puddle from the side, and slightly to the left of the puddle as I'm dragging the gun to the right. This gives you a good view of the bead profile, and still allows you to see the sides of the bevel. I mostly use self shielding wire, so the slag gives me a good idea how the bead is forming. I watch the division between the cooling slag, and the hot puddle.
Your welds should slightly crown, and fully cover the joint with a bit of overlap onto the plate.
There's some sorta AWS standard for how much you can crown the weld,, but I really can't remember what it is.
If need be, you can run it almost flush, as long as you make damn sure it fully fills the sides.
I really don't recommend this unless you've done it a while, and feel you have good control, and a good ability to actually see the puddle. It's easy to confuse the molten metal with the slag. You need to be able to distinguish the two from each other.

Re: The Official Craigslist Score Thread!
There is only one situation where I'll grind a "U" on a butt joint. That's when I can't physically get to both sides to grind a regular bevel.
Had to be brought together, and welded on the backside. The backside weld was simply a bead on the surface of the metal.
Then........................
The side I can reach is then ground to a bevel, but in a very certain way. I grind through the piece until I see the slag from the backside. All stick welds done with 7018 will leave slag anywhere the puddle comes into contact with the atmosphere........in this case, because the piece still had a crack underneath the backside weld, there was slag. When I see this slag, I continue grinding until I see shiny metal. This tells me that I've started grinding into the surface weld on the backside. I have full penetration
Then I can fill my bevel with stringers......................
I can't stress enough how important full penetration is, when doing butt welds. Without full penetration, you can, in effect, reduce the thickness of your metal, and the ability of it to do the job intended.
Granted, he didn't need full penetration on the blocks, but he needed a good deal more than the small bit of grinding on the joint.

Well, to be techinal................................FCAW-S
I very rarely show wire welds, I'd say about 99% of the crap I do is 7018. Not that there's anything wrong with wire, it's just that I usually just use stick unless it's on thin stuff. I'm not set up for Outershield. And I don't use the thicker wires that are self shielded.

I was pulling the rear end out of a parts truck, and the thing broke. But I don't think it was what made it break. I'm thinking it was a fatigue crack that eventually snapped, and would have done it while doing anything with the tractor. It just happened to happen at that time I guess.
I usually lift stuff much heavier, and daily lift stuff a lot lighter. I think it's the constant pounding that destroys these front ends. These old tractors simply weren't made for loaders.

LOL!!! kinda like most things including our bodies we use em' abuse em' then use em' some more... and then something comes along and kills it!!!! and gets the blame I think I'll call the white truck covid
But seriously I have seen similar brakes caused by a gouge that happened many years earlier and turned into a crack which kept growing everytime it got loaded and flexed... til' finally one days she just gives up!!!

Speaking of the green stuff. I got a good CL deal on a couple toys today. I’ve already posted it at WFM so if y’all are interested here is a link to what I scored today. Post # 1996

Nah I’m use to it by now. If it was my first good package deal like this then I’d agree and say yes but I had all my ducks in a row the day before while the sun was still up with getting the $16.00 Uhaul motorcycle trailer rental reserved for an early 9am p/u time, putting my ratchet strap bag in the car and putting cash in my wallet for the deal. Set my alarm for 8am and went about the rest of my day like any other day. I didn’t start getting anxious until I turned off of Hwy 17 onto Bear Creek Dr. a few minutes away from the sellers location. I’m still kind of in awe that the P.O. let all this go for the price listed on cL but stranger things have happened. He seems to have money and the whole package was a gift from his parents that they got from some type of museum in Brentwood CA not far from when I live here in Stockton. I just got very lucky is all with going on cL out of the blue and doing a random search. I use to scour CL looking for deals like this several times a day lol. Now that I have these things coming out of my ears I only look for the good deals every once in a blue moon and every once in a blue moon I find them
Perhaps it has not truly sank in yet. I mean I have never found a tractor let alone a package deal as significant as this with brand new aired up tires. I think the P.O. got tired of throwing money at it and eating time transporting it all over kingdom come trying to get it running properly. I’ll have fun digging into this 300 side by side with the other 300 I picked up a couple of years ago that has been waiting for a little attention like this one. I like having two side by side. I can easily swap parts between them for diagnosing problem w/o throwing a bunch of money at them for new parts
