Can't buy a new pickup with a manual transmission!

I was messing around on the big 3's websites "Build a truck" functions and none of them offer a manual transmission in their full size or even heavy duty pickups! Is this true or am I missing something?

nope... this been going on for years. If you want a manual transmission you either buy old or somehow you posses the knowhow to adapt one to a new vehicle , that due to the new BCM and ECU would be almost impossible. There are business that would reprogram your ecu and will sell you a TCU for specific transmissions. Otherwise forget about it. There were rumors about toyota bringing a manual transmission on the new Tundra but I dont know if its true. That is why I bought and old pickup and restored it.

Unless dodge stopped, they were the only ones left for manuals.

Can't buy a new pickup with a manual transmission!

Thats why my wife settled for the jeep compass rather than her first choice, the grand cherokee...

Compass, wrangler and maybe one other model offer a manual

    All our vehicles are stick
    She won't drive an automatic...
    LoL

My big truck in work is an automatic
    Freightliner...
But that's all the company is buying these days

A lot of new truck drivers don't even know how to drive a 10 or 18 speed

    Pretty sad.

Re: Can't buy a new pickup with a manual transmission!

I basically learned how to drive on a 1954 Maxim fire engine, with a four speed manual tranny, no syncromesh. You had to double clutch it to shift. Also drove a 1962 American LaFrance manual tranny quite a bit. Same thing, no syncromesh, you had to double clutch. But that one had a weird "U" shaped shift patter, as opposed to the normal "H" pattern. Most recently, in 2012, I had the privilege of driving a 1965 Citroen 2CV "Deux Chevaux". The shift lever on that moves in and out like a parking brake handle, and you twist the handle clockwise or counter clockwise to get it into gear.

All of that is to say I have driven a lot of manual tranny vehicles, and I don't miss it one bit.

My high school buddy had a '69 Chevelle with the 396/375 (solid lifter) engine and a 4-speed. Beast. Another had a GTO with a 389, the first of about a dozen GTOs he collected over the years.

Re: Can't buy a new pickup with a manual transmission!

Most people I talk to, still refer to a manual transmission as a standard transmission. But in the last twenty some odd years, the automatic has become the "Standard" transmission in most vehicles, and getting a manual one is an option at extra cost. If you can even get one in the particular vehicle you are interested in.

At least my motorcycles are still manual shift.

    I could make exceptions

For my daily driver though, I am over shifting.

Ram (Dodge) is the only manufacturer currently offering manual transmission trucks. 6 speed manual in the 2500 thru 5500 diesels only.
Ford and GM stopped quite a few years ago. Think Ford was around 2008 and GM even longer.

I went back to the Ram web site and did find that.
Ford stopped offering the manual transmission in the F150 in 2009 and in the Superduty in 2012.

There haven't been Sterling trucks built since 2009. Their pickup was a reskinned Dodge anyway.

My Ford Ranger has a manual transmission. I hate city driving with it and I hate towing anything with it. Unless it is an antique, I'll never pay money for another vehicle with a manual transmission.

Hey John T. My wife won't buy an automatic either. Makes the car buying arguments a bit easier. OK I just lied. It's still a "I want this, she wants that" battle royale.

My first car was a right hand drive Toyota with a four speed stick. Left handed shifting was the most fun!

Re: Can't buy a new pickup with a manual transmission!

My brother and I made our Mom buy a new '69 Camaro with a manual tranny back in the day. Thereafter, she drove a stick shift until she was over 60 (Dad then had arthritis). She said it gave her better control. Her Acura Legend 5-speed was a nice car.

    Guess I should keep my 1998 Toyota 4wd short-bed. 70,000 miles on it. I don't go far.

Re: Can't buy a new pickup with a manual transmission!

Its really not surprizing with the massive power modern trucks are putting down.

Mtd have always been slugish/underpowered because there wasnt a med sized trans that would hold up.

Now the ldt is beyond what the convensionally sized trans can handle. Without shoving a 800-1500lbs 2 screw 10spd that wont fit under the floor board....

Re: Can't buy a new pickup with a manual transmission!

I am sure a lot is fueled by EPA requirements too. 6 to 9 speed automatic transmissions are becoming more commonplace. Don't forget the disaster that is the CVT.... I can see diesel electric drive coming in the not too distant future like is used on some monster mining trucks and equipment. That tech has been around for years. All modern diesel locomotives are Electric drive. the Diesel engine just powers a giant generator. Electric drive is actually very effective because you have maximum torque from 1 RPM to whatever the max RPM is..... I haven't looked at new trucks in years. But this makes me more tempted to keep my F450 with its 6 speed stick.....

I did not realize that Manual Transmissions were going out.
My 2003 Ford F350 super duty dually 7.3 has a 6 speed manual tranny and 4x4, probably one of the last ones to have manual transmissions.
I better hold on to it because I will not find a better welding rig.

Re: Can't buy a new pickup with a manual transmission!

Looks like my next 1-ton will be a restoration project.

I will not settle for anything less than a manual transmission. My daily driver (2013 VW Jetta turbo-Diesel) has a six speed that has a low enough 1st so that stop-and-go-traffic is a non-issue and 6th has the engine turning just over 1500RPM @ 60MPH. I'd like to see an automatic do that!

Anybody have an automatic transmission that will be in the correct gear when you finally get past the cop and ticket-recipient? Nope! It'll be in next-to-top-gear with the torque converter clutch open (moving at 25MPH) then you press the pedal to get back to road speed (downshift to 2nd) over-rev (slam 3rd) build speed (now the computer and transmission are in the groove) smooth gear changes and the clutch closes when back to cruising at road speed.

I'll be in 3rd when I see things are breaking up. Call for power and upshift as needed.

We are living in way over-engineered times!

Re: Can't buy a new pickup with a manual transmission!

Why would you want to juggle gears in a big truck when you can have an 8 speed automatic? They are way better than the junk from the 70s and 80s. If you want a sports car, get a sports car. They still have manuals.
