I guy I know finished his electrical training and eventually got an electrician's job at the Microsoft data center in Boydton, VA. That's about 50-60 miles east of Danville. Massive server farm. Probably a great job for being out in the boonies.
Hello, my name is Tyler Howell (20 years old). I am from Norton, VA, and I am currently a first-year college student at Mountain Empire Community College. It hasn't taken long for me to realize that there are few useful majors, and that college--for the most part--is a scam. I may be wrong but that is my understanding. Fortunately, my college offers an Associate's degree in Energy Technology with a specialization in electricity, and also an Associate's degree in Welding. After I get the degree I will be able to enter the work force as either an apprentice electrician OR HVAC, or of course a welder. I have thought long and hard about what I should do in life, and I have decided that the trades are calling my name. I am wondering what to choose though. Moving is not a problem. I am willing to go anywhere in America as long as there is work. I love the world, and I am excited to start studying to do what I will do for the rest of my life. If anyone can offer any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tyler.

That sounds like a pretty cool gig to me, but I'm definitely not against travelling out of VA... in fact I kind of long to. You enjoy welding? How's your health?

Tyler,
There are apprenticeships available in Norfolk at the shipyards. They train you part time, you work part time. All paid. Think it starts at about $18. an hour.
