Getting something plasma cut into plate

So I've got a couple of questions about something I need to get done so when I go and talk to the person who will do it I can give the impression of knowing what I'm talking about.

    It's a sign for a building.

    Needs to read 'Bakehouse Studio'.

Maybe around 2' long by 1' high.

    Out of 4mm plate?

I'll weld brackets to it so I can mount it.

I have no idea what happens now. Do I get someone to make up the design on a computer file? Is there a common computer language that these machines use? What would this sort of thing cost?
    Yeah, I carry.

House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.

Typically you send your local plasma / laser cutter service a DWG file also known as a CAD file. If you do not have this, they will most likely charge you a setup and design fee.

Ah, a CAD file. I've heard of that. So if I can't find anybody with CAD, I'll get it done in another program and pay the bloke with the plasma cutter to covert it.
    Yeah, I carry.

    Thanks for the offers, guys.

It's something for my wife's studio. The fact that I can tell her I've had some offers to assist with creating the CAD file should encourage her to think about a design.

What do you reckon it would cost to do the cutting if I supply the steel? I have no idea what that sort of thing costs.
    Yeah, I carry.

Well, realistically, if you supply the steel, depending on how detailed the cut is, a 2x1' shouldn't take more than a minute to cut. If you're a talker, I'm sure most places would cut it for you for under 15-20 bucks. Probably a 12pack if you catch the guy at the end of the day.

Dont insult him by giving him a 12 pack.

Make sure its a slab ( carton in Sydney ).

    24 pack.............

    ....or a block..............

    30 pack.

It cost almost as much to buy 12 cans ( 2 x 6 pack ) than it does to buy a slab...

    Back to OP......

    Thanks all.

I'll get the missus onto the design - keeping it nice and simple.
