DC straight is DC negative.
Hey guys I picked up a old century 100 from a pawnshop for $30.
Its factory set for DC straight and Im trying to change it to DC negative. I thought it would be as simple as changing the work clamp wire with the gun wire.... yeah, that ended badly.
DC straight is DC negative.

Because this is a cheep *** welder, your not going to be able to run it DC straight. (flux-core I assume). The stupid machine doesn't use a dedicated power supply for the wire feed and only has a single wire from the gun trigger. WTF??? Someone else on this forum was trying to replace the rectifiers on one of these pigs; I do hope he got the right polarity.
You might be able to figure it out but it's not going to be easy. IMHO: Suck it up and go MIG only.
BTW: The rectifier design a bad and will soon fail....

The wiring diagram shows the machine configured for DC Straight (DCEN for flux core) and even states such on the drawing.
If you're attempting to switch it to DCEP for MIG then just swap the main output cable positions at the drive assembly.
How about posting a shot of the drive assembly where the cables attach?

Had this shot of a Century machine drive assembly. Just swap positions with the short (white) jumper cable and work clamp (black) cable at the drive assembly to change polarity.

Hey guys thanks. I got this thing to play with. I have my new ESAB rebal ( its pretty sweet) for other stuff. The century is terrible , but I wouldnt use it for anything other than hobby stuff. Thank you Duaneb55 for the photo thats what I was looking for. All the orginial labels are gone and I'm not paying $8 bucks for a new manual for something to put around with.

This unit is a hot wire welder. No contactor. when changing polarity the trigger wire might need to move also. Send me a PM with you e-mail with the welder model number.
I have the manuals and can send you one.
Look near the drive or on the lid, how to change polarity should be on a sticker.
The owners manual just says you can and to change it to match the needs of the wire you are using. So the instructions were on the welder
Am I correct that the picture posted by duaneb55 shows the welder already converted to reverse polarity. I ask because mine is wired with the white and black swapped... and I suspect it is incorrect for gas welding.
use a voltmeter to confirm the welder polarity. you never know if somebody has switched a wire.
