    Finding small jobs

I wanted an idea of How some of y'all got around to finding small jobs. Besides family and friends did you put it out on websites, newspapers, or just go to different locations and offer your services. I've seen welders after wrecks getting called to fix the damage would that be a job that you would go talk to the city about or just word of mouth? Welders doing repairs on anything from farm equipment, boats, planes and 18 wheelers would this be another word of mouth or just go to where ever you see welding could be needed and drop a business card off? I own a welding rig with a classic 300, also have 3 portable machines 2 that run flux core and mig while the other runs Tig. Weld aluminum, carbon, stainless steel, and Inconel. I worked welding bridges here in Texas for Kansas City and the highways of Houston and the railroads. Worked making giant cooling systems for the oil fields, time on the pipeline, manufacturing and fabrication.

Word of mouth takes time, obviously. I have a few alerts on Craigslist under the gigs section. For example, if someone posts an ad with "welding" in the title, I get an automatic email. Hardly any welding hits have turned into jobs but I have got a couple. Most leads are small shops looking for welding help at $15/hr. I don't do repairs or automotive so you might have better luck than me.

many people especially "friends" want welding done cheap. not many will pay over $100/hr for you to show up and do a job
    .
lucky you get $100 welding a whole afternoon like for over 5 hours work.

If I do a job for a friend I do it for free ,and only do one .I have seen to many friendships end from doing work for friend and getting paid for it.Either you don't get paid or you charged to much, and nobody ends up happy

I've had good luck opening the garage door and doing projects for myself. Somehow, the arc draws people like moths to a flame. Depending on where you live, this may work for you also.
