I wonder what that is all about. Genset unit or just a portable stick welder?

I could tell you, but I would be lying because I have no earthly idea. Dan has tested MIG welders for them in the past. I applaud Hobart for reaching out for some grass-roots feedback. Just thought it was worth mentioning.

Oh and thanks for sharing the link Oldendum. I honestly wouldn't have seen it on the other site as it's been quite awhile since I been over there.

Do they let you keep them after the trial period or issue shipping labels to ship em back?

Then whats the point. Do the dirty work on our dollar to see what makes the machine cry. Welding rods are kind of pricey if they are not supplying them.

Hobart will treat everyone right, that's all I know.. Great bunch of people there....When my friend went back to the Ohio plant for Airgas, he was super impressed with all the people in the factory. He has been to Esab SC, Lincoln in Ohio, and Millers place in Appleton. That tells you something right there..

What kind of jobs will a stick do that that flux-cored will not? Flux-cored has replaced my occasional need for a stick welder, for things like a round rail fence or any weld outside in the wind.

Maybe somebody only wants to carry a few Stainless rods/etc to repair something correctly, in a package that weighs 10 pounds or so. Loading up a wirefeed with the correct wire, can be costly, unhandy, and the wrong process on top of it..

    Re: Field test a Hobart?

Maybe I'm just old school but I still find myself burning a lot of welding rods each year...I have one of my HH 140s loaded with fluxcore and a suitcase welder that I typically run fluxcore in but even with both of those sitting there ready to go I still will burn a lot of 6010 and 7018 every year. IMO stick still has a very predominant place in the welding industry. Especially in the repair sector.

I'm a UA pipefitting apprentice and as far as I know we only use stick and Tig. At least in our local and according to travellers I've worked with. Pipe welders I've worked with seem to be of the opinion stick/Tig is "real" welding and fluxcore/MIG is "big hot glue gun"
