I need a Deer Guard for a 2011 Ford Ranger

My 2004 Ranger was destroyed when Buck decided to commit suicide and chose me as his unsuspecting executioner:

I have procured a replacement and would like to purchase or build a grill guard in the hopes the damage will not be so severe if his cousin decides to do the same thing:

    Any pics or recommendations?

    Thanks!

Even a brush guard, while it may reduce body/cosmetic damage, it will increase structural damage such as bending the frame, which is usually grounds to total an older vehicle. So there is a break point with speed of impact that will result in the same end result. Anything stout enough to protect from that impact will add significant weight to your vehicle, reduce handling and gas mileage and require an alignment for the new "normal" ride height.

Makes probably the best functional bumpers, but not for mini trucks. Probably for the exact reasons I listed above.

You are in snow country. With a few hundred lbs in front of the front axle, snow ice handling will be terrible. Esp if that's a 2wd version

I had friends several years ago th a t use to swear by. The deer whistle on the fronts of their cars. They are a small chrome item attached to the bumper, finder areas. Wind traveling through the whistle tube made high pitched sound that only animals could hear, keeping them away from the highways. Just my two bits. John

Also keep in mind that the crumbling sheet metal absorbed energy that would have otherwise been transferred to you.

The replacement truck is 4WD. I don't think I would want one that weighs "a few hundred pounds". I guess no one should put a plow on anything smaller than a 6x6 F350 eh? Better not put a plow on a CJ5 or it will be standing on it's nose!

Useless on 3-lane interstate highway with heavy traffic. I was in the middle lane in fast and heavy traffic, 10:30 PM. That animal leapt from the shadows on the side of the highway immediately behind a white van that had just passed me in the left lane.

I had three CJ-5's with snow plows. Two were 258ci, and one was a 304V8, (AMC engines). All were excellent snow plow units for close confinement areas w/6.5' Meyer snowplows. Only negatives were they liked for the driver to be cold in the winter and hot in the summer, and they did like to rust.....

I know where a two auger one is in the scrap. If you fabricate the mounts to put it onto a Ranger and assure me it will work and you will use it on that truck, I'll acquire it for you. It came off an OshKosh airfield maintenance truck very similar to the one in the photo.

I thought CJ's LOVE rust! They seem to wallow in it!

My son acquired an '82 CJ7 back in June that had genuine Flintstone flooring. When I finished welding in new floor pans for him I told him it was time for passengers to chip in for fuel. No more peddling!

I replaced the tub on two of mine and grafted frame sections into one at the rear spring hangers. They took to rust like a duck takes to water.....

I am making progress already, I found a hydraulic pump on a shelf in the cellar I can use to power it. Just need to fab a bracket so it can be driven off the serpentine belt!

Back to building a guard... I can start with coat hanger wire to build a prototype and just beef it up as I go.

Best pic I could find to express my feelings.

I think about everyone in my immediate family hit a deer when we lived in NJ. One time I picked up a very fresh carcass (didn't hit that one) and gave it to a Laotian refugee family. Boy, were they ever in 7th heaven! There's a corridor on I-78 just outside the congested areas where it joined I-287. Plenty of rich people with 20-100 acre estates (Trump owns a place there, as did John DeLorean, Mike Tyson, Malcom Forbes and others). Deer city. One stretch looked like hamburger alley all the time. Deer crossing from one golf course to another.

I hit a downed deer carcass in my wife's little Honda Civic once, coming around a blind curve. Just sort of skipped over it, though there was hair clinging to the undercarriage for quite some time. She plowed into a live deer in my company car with much worse results.

I NJ at my folk's house, we saw as many as 20 deer in the yard munching on the shrubs. Here in Richmond, I've only seen about 7 or 8 in or nearby the yard, including one albino. It's freaky when you go out the man door of the garage and come face-to-fae with one, neither one of us expecting it. Other times, I can go out and talk to them standing in the next yard. They turn their butts towards me and wiggle their tails as they eat grass. But they are not as exciting as the three young raccoons that came into the house through the cat door in the wee hours of the morning. Or the small Carolina flying squirrels. 3 a.m. is not the time to commune with nature. Opossums are vastly underrated. Ugly but very laid back.

In that case it is likely to handle anything you may encounter. A little overkill can be a good thing. Plus it looks kind of cool too. If that Tacoma can handle it, surely your Ranger can, too.

For many years while I was growing up, my dad and his brother shared a steel-cab Willy's Jeep with an inline 4, 3spd gearbox and 6' snowplow. That was used to clear the driveways at their respective houses, several neighbors and the parking lot at the auto repair shop they owned.

My dad still laments that it would be a better choice than the F-350 and 8' blade I use now.

I used to do several lumber yards in those days along with several apartment complexes and the Jeeps were the "nuts" in the application. I too had a 3500 series GMC with an 8.5' Meyer plow to which I added folding wings on the outer edges to increase capacity. The Jeeps would clears the lumber bunks and the GMC went after the large lanes and parking areas prior to the stores opening usually. I still have an 8.5" Meyer plow converted to mount onto my skid steer and it does a fine job but is unwieldy to use in a lot of applications. I run fluid filled tires on the skid steer and sometimes chains instead of the "grouser" bars and it does fine but will not push a full blade at an angle of heavy snow. Although most did not agree I installed automatic transmissions from CJ-7's into the Jeeps as they were much easier to work this way.

I would recommend this as a proven design...but you may need to extend it up slightly above the windshield...

    LOL!!
But to the best of my knowledge there is no record of a locomotive cow-catcher ever actually catching or deflecting a cow off the rails.
