    Re: Hypertherm Powermax 30XP?

I prefer stick welding for critical welds. Flux core is similar enough to stick welding and it burns in better than solid wire MIG. Dual shield flux core uses shielding gas and a flux core wire. It produces a superior weld and easy slag removal. It also burns in better and runs hotter than regular MIG. You can get 10 lb spools of it in .035". I buy the larger rolls of .045" because it burns in better than thinner wire and it deposits a lot more weld metal per minute. I only use dual shield for 1/4"+ steel. You can go either way with 1/4" steel. It's not too thick to properly weld with er70s6 solid wire MIG.

So dual shield MIG for critical welds. You also need to crank up the shielding gas to 35-40 cfh. Not a huge issue because you shouldn't be making any super critical welds at your age. Leave that stuff to the professionals. You can practice with it to learn but you need more experience before attempting critical welds.

    Keith,

As you begin to learn about how metals weld, and react to welds, this is going to be one of your best friends if you really wanna look into how YOUR particular welds end up being.

I hope you have some kind of metal chop saw/abrasive saw, simply because it will be the fastest way to slice something to macro-etch it to see the weld profile from within the metal. After slicing a part that you welded, you'd have to polish it as smooth as possible to get the best possible view. A couple different [smooth] grits of sandpaper will do if you don't have power/air sanding tools.

This way you can see if you got a good penetration into the root of the joint...

...or if you have a cold bead that is mostly laying on top of the base metals and didn't fuse properly into the root...

Those images are not mine, found them on Google Images. This one is mine, welded with my Millermatic 211.

So what you need to do, is do practice welds for the various different types of scenarios, then cut them all up and etch them, especially if you later on want to do structual welds that need to hold. I'm not saying that macro-etching is the end-all for inspecting welds, just one tool in the toolbox to help get you started.

The Hypertherm plasma cutters are the best quality you can buy. I would get the next size up. I bought a 27 amp Hypertherm 380 and I always wanted more power. It's well worth the extra money in my opinion. And you won't outgrow it. The Hobart 190 can weld any metal thickness. Keep in mind that even professional welders don't weld 1/2" steel pipe in a single pass. Multi pass welds at 125 amps can weld 1" steel plate.

I also had a Miller Spectrum 875 plasma cutter but I sold it. I was worried that it would blow out after the warranty. The one thing that I did like about the Miller 875 was the detachable plasma torch and ground clamp.

This is what the inside of a Millermatic 211 looks like. Just a circuit board.

    Attachment 1588761
    Attachment 1588771
    Attachment 1588781
    Attachment 1588791
Man, you sure are a broken record with the inverter vs. transformer stuff. Believe me, we ALL get it - you THINK transformers better - but that's ok, everyone has the right to have an opinion. You should update your signature to say "PSA: I THINK TRANSFORMER MACHINES ARE BETTER AND YOU SHOULD TOO" ...you know, just to clear the air once and for all

And FYI: HT Powermax plasmas are inverters

Mine's actually scheduled to self destruct tonight!!!

Yeap, let's all pack up and go home. Let me put my HTP Invertig 221, and my other two inverters out on the curb so someone can pick them up and save me the agony.

Yea, I guess those inverters are bad, HOW BAD ??? Well my old shop bought 6 of the '' FIRST GENERATION XMT 304's '' those pieces of garbage are still running GREAT today. Never broke down and they gotta be 15 years old and used daily . GUYS are upset because they want new machines !
Oh. I guess the CST 280's are junk too. We have those deadbeats too. They are newer from 2007. Same shlt , they still work today.

I'm interested to see 1" steel plate being welded out with mig at only 125 amps all the way out with out some crazy preheat. I don't think it would last in my bend tester

With the money you save, you can easily buy a nice 140 amp mig welder for about $400 and STILL have money in the bank. You need to remember you’re not a professional by any means and you won’t be using the 30XP even close to the amount the pros do.

I hate to say, and frankly, I don’t give a damn, but too many people on this and any forum, have very little regard to actually offering the information you “need” rather than what you “want”.

Can you PM your address and what time you are putting your machines out? I was thinking I would save the sanitation department some agony maybe just to be a good person you know.
