Different way to find year of SA-200?

I have an sa 200 that the faceplate that was on it had serial number of what I have learned to be a 1973. I'm thinking it is older than that. Was wondering if there was any other way to determine year. The reasons I believe is older is the on/off switch, choke, and start button are all on back beside battery. And I have to push bar and stick pin in for it to remain on high idle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds right. Take the unit Code# off the face plate and download the manual to compare.

I have printed off manual. I was wondering if there was any place on frame, engine, etc that the serial number would be stamped. Seems hard for to believe the only place for a serial number is on the face place that to me is an interchangeable part and frequently done by what I've seen. I have been told it could be anywhere from a 66-70. And I don't know if it's a red face or black face. Is there I can confirm that too?

Yep. That's correct. Unfortunately the only place Lincoln put the unit SN was on the face plate.

Some older (Short Hood) units had the SN stamped in the generator housing but not the later units. However, you should find the Code# stamped in the housing near the main and exciter housing split line on the left side (facing control panel) approximately in line with the 10 o'clock exciter housing bolt.

What makes you think its older than 73? 73 was a major transition year for the sa200. During that year the cable lugs went around to the side, the electronic idler showed up, Face plate changed to green light style. Around this time too came the hex barrel. Cant tell for sure from your pics but if it is a hex then for sure its 72 0r 73. I don't think there were any hex barrells prior to 72 but i could be wrong about that. The faceplate you have was used after the redface from about 1970 or 71 till the green light, three or four years later. Yours could very well be an early 1973 model.

The faceplate in the picture is new one I put on it. But everybody I have talked to have seemed to think it's 66-70. I found plate on side of engine with code and number. Is there a way I can look those numbers anywhere?

Re: Different way to find year of SA-200?

Code 7214 was used in 1972 and 1973.

My undereducated guess is they were using up the earlier chassis before the full on greenlight chassis were in full production. (output studs on front panel vs side, no notch vs notch for radiator cap, R57 vacuum idler vs electronic plunger type, and start/stop/choke controls on battery end) I've seen quite a few like this out there. Even a couple of low mount starters on octagon barrel gennys.
