Sometimes 2 breakers are used and a piece of wire goes through the hole on the switch to tie them together.

    It's a 30 amp 240v when used like that.

Although I've only seen it used on older wiring jobs so it may not be done anymore?

Yes if you use a tie that would be fine I guess

Not sure if that is code anymore

I'll stick with a dedicated two pole breaker

Also if I was putting in a 220 outlet
I would have made it a 50 amp

It's two 30 amp breakers that aren't connected. What should I tell my electrician to install?

Honestly you should find another electrician

You shouldn't have to tell a professional electrician anything

He just told me that it was a double pole breaker. Is that correct?

Ok thanks. I'm going to check to see if there is actually a double pole breaker there when I get home.

    I'm sure you did.

They throw people for a sec because they do look like 2 single Breakers side by side and they will have 30amp stamped on each side.

Are the 2 120v outlets your new 120v 30amp receptacles?

    Yes.
    What broccoli said.

If you pop the breaker you want both 110 legs to be shut off.

Not sure legs is the right terminology but you know what I mean.

Also I think Dave was right
Looks like the only thing that separates a single pole from a 2 pole is the tie...

Some are made as two pole and have one handle, some are two separate breakers with a tying mechanism between the operating levers. Don't run them as separated handles. If they are separate handles, at the very least get the proper connecting bar. Sometimes it was just a roll pin that went into the hole on the handles. You want them to both operate together. I DON'T know if that is still code, been too long. btw. Square D QO are the standard if you have the choice.
