Could plug something else in but only if you unplug the pump and alarm. Part of the problem is the gfi is usually on a post a few inches tall. It's humid and wet here so they just get moisture in them even in a box. Home owners don't want a tall post in their yards so electricians make them short.

as previously stated i fixed the problem. the extreme conditions of the gfi being subjected to the sun and cold caused condesation in the outside weatherproof box. this caused the gfi to corrode and trip the circuit. moving the gfi inside to controlled conditions solved the problem and the circuit is still protected. also you have to remember i live in ARKANSAS, the land of the RAZORBACKS, where the front row of a game has 400 feet and 6 teeth. where the name of the tooth brush, not teeth came from.

It's funny, I've spent two days on septic pump problems in two different systems. One, the wires from the house were just too short to work, so we interrupted the conduit in the lawn a couple feet from the tank, and put a flush mount ground box near. It enabled us to run conduit with gas sealing fitting to the two floats, and pump. It enables diagnosis without digging, or exposing oneself to sewage.

There's always a neighbor's brother in law's cousin's uncle who will install a septic pump for a case of beer. People are always very proud of beating the system, and finding a cheap way to install. When that system needs repair, the installer is no longer available.

The reason the OP's sewage backed up is because the GFI tripped. He asked for advice about a neon indicator lamp. He used a neon indicator and relocated the GFI. His problem is solved.
