New mig machine. Millermatic 252 vs Hobart 230

Iím in the market for a new mig machine. There is roughly $1k difference in price between the two. This machine will be used in my farm shop so it will not be used for production type work. Any thoughts suggestions would be very helpful

Made by the same people (ITW). The difference is going to be in top end power (250 amps for the Ironman 230 and 300 amps for the 252), duty cycle (175 A at 25.5 VDC for Ironman vs 200 Amps at 28 VDC for the 252) and some features. The MM252 has adjustable pre flow, post flow, run in, spot timer, works with a push pull gun, etc. Ironman uses tapped voltage settings vs infinite settings for the MM252. I also think the MM 252 has a higher top end welding voltage which may help with some gas shielded flux core wires.

Lots of folks have nice things to say about the Ironman. I would look for a clean used unit instead of buying new, but that's just me. both the MM and ironman are transformer units and are kind of bullet proof, making a clean used unit worth looking at.

I have the iron man 230 and it works great, a simple not much can go wrong machine, it has set amps to set at, and dont find the need for an infinite amount of settings for what im doing, I bought it from northern and they had a special for a spool gun combo... https://www.northerntool.com/shop/to...6174_200456174

Buy an HTP 2400. If you don't like it ? send it back. No questions. You wont.

I have to say I am really loving my new Miller 252. Coming from the Hobart 190 the difference is pretty amazing.

I cant speak from experience of the actual machine.

But i had a Hobart 130, Hobart 210MVP and now the Lincoln 210.

The hobarts were both good machines but I like having the infinity adjustable setting which the hobarts lack.

The Ironman 230 performance with solid wire and C25 is most definitely good. As pointed out it does lack the fine voltage adjust of the 252. I've ran multiple brands of solid wire on the 230, and it performed well with most all of them. Lincoln's L-56 is one wire that doesn't seem to run very well on the unit. Hobart Brothers HB-28 runs real clean on the 230.

Big downside to me would be no ability to run a 30A spoolgun.

what is the benefit of the 30A versus the spoolmate style gun for the Hobart?

I have used MIG since 1970's never need spoolgun,
I run steel, stainless steel and aluminum
The big down side to spoolguns, is 2 LB of wire
I use 50 LB coil to save money on wire

on a hobbyist side of it, the spool gun makes changing from alum, ss quicker and easier than messing with the larger spool, since 99.9% of the time its not alot of welding and the 2lb spool lasts a long time..for professional I would think most of the work you would blow through 2 lbs fast and the bigger spool is the way to go...IMHO

I have changed wire fast on coil too
The spoolgun, does cost just to have the gun too.
Most mig welders will take a 2 BL too

For me he spool gun is wo th its cost when your 25 feet in a al dump trailer putting in floor patches. I don't have a push pull set up or a 25 plus foot lead on the welder.
I have the Miller 252 can't say anything bad about it, around here they hold their value

Simply an Engrish as a second language barrier. Reminds me of all the times I hear this quote. " Eats not my yob main "
Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo. Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.

Couldn't imagine not having a spool gun always connected to my miller. Although I run a 350p it's the same idea. The fact is if you are doing many different jobs in a day having a spool gun loaded with aluminum spool at the ready save nothing but time. I run two bottles of gas, c25 for the dual shield on the mig side and argon on the spool gun side. If the Hobart doesn't have the ability to run a spool gun then I'd go Miller all the way
