Welding Helmet Lens Cleaner, Ya or Na?

I came across a can of welding helmet "lens cleaner" yesterday. I was wondering if anyone here uses it at all and if it is worthwhile? With all the dust and sediment in my workplace I would have thought that it would just scratch the lenses? Also is it flammable/ has anyone had any bad experiences?

Rinse lens under the faucet to get the dust off then put a dab of dish washing on it rub with fingers and rinse, dry with soft cloth.

I agree, sounds like some marketing wank. If fixed shade, blow any loose crap off, run under water, wash er up. Dry Er off.

For auto-dark, clean lens protectors as above. For auto dark unit itself blow it off with some cleaned compressed air, and follow up with a clean lint free cloth, like you would use for eyeglasses, electronics screens, and whatnot. If you MUST use a liquid on the AD unit where the above procedure won’t wipe something off, use the same type of cloth with some soft water.(Barely damp) Soft water means purified, distilled etc. don’t want to leave waterspots.

If all else fails look at the active ingredients on the can, just sounds like a ploy to make money on a “specialty welding product” to me. How much does it cost?

I would advise caution using alcohol on plastic lenses or protectors. I’ve had experience in the past where using alcohol(and especially ammonia) based cleaners on clear plastics has caused them to become cloudy following cleaning. However I’m unsure about the properties of denatured alcohol, and if the phenomenon occurs with all plastics.

been using (Automotive) Meguiars Ultimate quick detailer for some time now- seems to work pretty well although not really sold for cleaning plastic welding helmet lenses.

Pretty much. I wash $600 champagne lasses, crystal vases and hood lenses....and face shields with a little Dawn and a sponge.

I use this stuff on motorcycle and welding lids.

You wipe them with a soft cloth, then, after a bit throw them away. Yes, yes, you hate paying so much for those proprietary Miller covers but move (eventually) on to something that is smarter, I mean less expensive.

My wife works for an Optometrist and gets lots and lots of free sample stuff, the lens cleaners are typically isopropyl alcohol, I don't know the strength, butI typically substitute 91% for most of my lens cleaning needs as well as the "so called" anti static stuff. The anti static wipes smell like alcohol too. The cleaning cloths look like polyester/cotton scrap. For my glasses I like a little dawn or liquid hand soap and a microfiber washcloth. lenses and/or lens covers should never be wiped with a dry cloth, the liquids act as a surfactant to lift the dirt off the surface to prevent scratching. That being said the AD hoods are probably fine as long as you just mist the lens, if you need more then remove the cover plate and clean it right.

You can polish plastic lenses, Novus 1 works well for regular cleaning. and it's anti fog , anti static as well

I get the industrial size because I use it on everything including computer screens and motorcycle face shields. Just put it in some small spray bottles and get a case of lens tissues and it will last you for years.

I bought the 3 bottle kit ... fixed a pretty good scratch in a motorcycle windshield.
roloc polish pad and air tool.
