    Lincoln weldanpower question

Looking to purchase a Lincoln weldanpower AC DC for a decent price. Was told the motor runs strong, looks to be in good condition, but no power to welder or outlets. Mentioned electric motor doesn't move. Not really sure what to do. Looking for any advice for what to look at before I actually make the purchase. Thanks

What's a "decent price"? Which specific model Weldanpower AC/DC? There were several.

Could be anything from a poor connection, blown fuse, bad bridge rectifier to a fried stator, open winding in the rotor or a broken brush slip ring the older Weldanpower units are known for.

If you don't know what you're looking for or at with a nonworking welder/generator, approach with extreme caution and be prepared to kiss your $$$ goodbye if it turns out to be a bust.

There is NO electric motor on a Weldanpower. However, the generator portion may LOOK like an electric motor to the untrained eye. So it may be a sheared coupling between the engine and generator. If possible check to see if that portion can be turned by hand without the engine running. If it can, then the coupling IS sheared, but can be replaced. The main thing in this case is to determine that the rotor is not bound up and can turn freely.

I didn't think of the "electric motor" statement in that light Bistineau. You may be onto something there.

If it has the tapered shaft connection it might be the through bolt got loose. Depending on how long it was run like that you might be able to retighten the bolt. Duane, given the model and spec #s you'd probably know about this.

Hmm.......electric motor parts on an engine drive. We're already in too deep on this one. Better punt.

I attached pictures of the welder.

It definitely seems like the guy has no clue about what hes talking about. All he has said is that the motor runs but it doesn't weld. He was asking $900. I got him down to $375.. I dont know much about these but I'm willing to get it and see what I can do. Seems like a good price to me...? Going to look at it Tuesday.

I'm a decent mechanic and have worked on a lot of engines and have some experience with electrical. Any advice on what to do first or what to check for when I go will be appreciated.

    Re: Lincoln weldanpower AC DC

If salvageable $375 will be a great price. Only thing that would make it better is if it were the CV model too.

First things to look at are the brushes and rotor slip rings. Check the slip rings for a broken one and if OK the brushes to see that they are free to move in their holders. If rings and brushes are OK, the slip rings may just need a cleaning with a fine (320grit) sandpaper.

Ok I will check it out before I buy it to make sure. Trying to find a picture of what I'm looking at. Do you have one one hand? Thanks

I just found one. So if the slip rings or brushes are broken is it a lost cause or can they be replaced?

Several W&P owners have repaired a cracked slip ring by brazing. Brushes are still available and replaceable.

I was kind of afraid of the cracked slip ring deal.
