    SA250 motor in a SA200

I have had some time on my hands and found a 64 red face with a bad motor, and a SA250 with a bad generator. How hard would it be to combine the two into a diesel powered Red Face? I couldn’t find a good thread with the pictures still working (photo bucket isn’t sharing anymore).

Pull 'em both apart and see.

I was going to buy the 64, if he comes back with a reasonable price. Then saw someone selling the 250. And my mind started to wonder. I am not sure I am ready to buy them both and experiment at the current prices they are asking. Maybe I can get some more details. With no one jumping in with an answer I am begining to think they are not just a direct bolt together

Sorry. I presumed you already owned both units.

Being diesel is the 250 an AC auxiliary power machine?

Can you get the Code #s for both from their owners?

    Re: SA250 motor in a SA200

I have to believe the diesel is AC auxiliary which means it operates at 1800rpm whereas the SA200 gasser runs at 1550rpm so you'd have to slow the diesel down 250rpm coupled to the red face round barrel generator. I don't see that being an issue regarding power.

As for the generator bolting up the diesel I believe your biggest challenge will be with the starter as you will likely have to cut into the housing to provide clearance for the nose cone. This would be due to the starter being in a different location on the diesel from that of the Continental gas.

I'm going to guess the '64 main armature will mate up with the diesel flywheel like it was made for it.

SPOOLED did this conversion and I believe he chopped the unit also. It was documented on this site a while back.

My advice would be to sell the sa250 get you a good 200 and leave it gas . If your dead set on diesel converting it I’d go kubota if I were to do it again .

Hey spooled, went to check out a couple of your threads and bummed to see all your Photochuckit pics are gone.

Yea I know , I lost them in the photobucket fiasco . I got most of them on a disk somewhere though but it would be a pain to go back through and redo them .

Okay, the 64 has a rod hanging out of the block, but I also brought home a 79 with a distributor that fails to turn, worst case it donates the engine to the 64 and I harvest a few parts for my 58 that I have.

This makes 4 in the yard and two at my uncles, things are starting to spiral out of control.

Which motor? 3 or 4 cylinder Perkins? I’ve done a 64 armature to a 4 cyl Perkins. Very strait forward.
Long after the price is forgotten, the quality will remain.
