I always thought splitting wood accomplished several things.... one of which is helping the wood shed moisture quicker so you don't have to put it up for 10-20 years before it is seasoned enough to burn good....

It does, but you need to season it to begin with to be more easily splittable. If you're splitting green wood by hand, you're working too hard.

    I liked burning wood,
    https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...-pellets-40-lb.

That maul is looking like you are going to need a chain fall to lift it but once you drop it it ought to split the entire tree in one shot.

You're right....I learned at least 30 years ago that when the wedge goes in and water comes out then it ain't seasoned enough

I put another fillet weld on each inside joint and got everything beside the tip. Put my 1/8” tungsten in and used 230 amps at timesName: B6635DE3-51F3-4269-B822-2EBAA95D7A74.jpg

    Looking very nice

Have you figured a handle mount yet?

Also: you should think up a signature/brand you can weld onto your works

Thanks ronsii! No I haven’t. Figured I’d date it tho lol. Looks like I could have grooved out the nose a little more but whatever it’s got 3 passes under it everywhere. Here’s my idea for the handle. Think I’d make much difference whether i put it on the inside or outside?Name: F3966544-378D-4DE5-AF8D-6E34B4908AC7.jpg

Outside and you won't be able to 'sledge' it into the wood if it gets stuck...

I could make it outa 1/4” wall. I’m not sure I’d have a problem getting this puppy stuck much. If it does it will have a 2”x3” handle at the head. Maybe I could leave an inch and not have the handle go all the way up the back, also it’s got plenty of room on the sides of the back Incase it did need hit

    Re: Splitting maul build

If the handle is outside the triangle, it will be impossible to control it as you raise it over your head. It will want to roll off to one side of the other, depending on gravity. The effect is at its worst when you reach the high point on the arc of your swing. Think of a pendulum.

Any deviation from a true circle swing will cause the heavy part to want to seek gravity, and fall off towards that perpendicular point. In other words...…..it will twist in your hand to one side or the other. Don't want something that heavy twisting in your hands.

For S&G's.....tack a piece of stock outside, and see how the head will always want to "hang", instead of just sit there in a balanced mode. You want balance. Balance is beautifulName: tkqe4fh-smiley-two-thumbs-up175028_285604.gif

I was told you get warm 3 times by using wood for heat..once when you cut the tree down, second when you split it and third when you burn it....that maul is more like a heart attack for the second warming..
lets see how much swinging it takes before it becomes too heavy to lift or you blow out a shoulder or arm doing it...

    Re: Splitting maul build

I have a wedge like bonzoo posted (black, not gold). If one or two swings with a regular splitting maul doesn’t get the job done or if it looks knarly I grab the wedge. Works great for me. I also try to save up 8-10 cords worth of wood to split every few years and rent or borrow a hydraulic splitter. In between I cut and split miscellaneous stuff that has to come down anyway.

Looking forward to a video with the monster maul.

I was always told the same.
When younger I used my 20 lb maul almost exclusively.
As I got older I looked at it as the one to use when a 6 or 8 didn't work because often the light ones worked in one or two hits on straight stuff.
So now it only gets used when needed.

I never found it real tiring to use, just unnecessarily heavy to carry around - which made me more tired.

It really drives a wedge nicely
